Chiplun is a working market town in Ratnagiri district, about 250 km south of Mumbai on the old Mumbai–Goa highway, now NH 66, and about 90 km north of Ratnagiri. It grew on the banks of the Vashishti River, which rises in the Western Ghats and reaches the Arabian Sea near Dabhol, and for centuries the river was its link to trade. Today it is one of the commercial hubs of the district and a convenient halt for travellers on the Konkan road.
The visit is gentle in scale. The main sights are the Parshuram Temple on a ridge about 11 km out, the small ruined fort at Gowalkot on the estuary, boat trips on the river where mugger crocodiles live, and a local Shivaji museum at Dervan. A town library with a small archaeology museum and a goddess temple on the Terav plateau fill out a short list. Nothing here is grand; the appeal is quiet Konkan country, river views and a break from the coastal circuit.
Timing matters more than most places. The monsoon, roughly June to October, is intense, the Vashishti has flooded its banks in the past, and river trips depend on the tide. Visit between November and February for dry, bright days. For parents and older travellers, Chiplun works well as a one- or two-night stop with a car, a few short outings and plenty of rest.
