Plan 01

1 day in Chopta

  1. 01

Day 1: Tungnath morning, meadow afternoon

Start from the trailhead at Chopta by about 7 am for the walk to Tungnath, roughly 3.5 km each way, and take darshan at the temple. Rest at a tea stall on the descent. Return for lunch and a slow afternoon along the meadow edge and forest road, then watch the light change on the peaks before dinner.

Plan 02

2 days in Chopta

  1. 01

    Day 1: Arrive and settle

Drive in from Ukhimath or Rudraprayag, allowing a stop at Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath. Check in, rest to adjust to the altitude and take a short walk along the meadow at sunset.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Tungnath and Chandrashila

Begin early for Tungnath, then continue to Chandrashila if you are fit and the sky is clear. Descend before afternoon cloud, rest and eat. Depart in the late afternoon or stay a second night.

Plan 03

3 days in Chopta

  1. 01

    Day 1: Via Ukhimath

Drive from Rudraprayag, stopping at Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath and, if time allows, the Vishwanath temple in Guptkashi. Reach Chopta in the evening and rest.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Tungnath and Chandrashila

Walk to Tungnath early and, if fit, on to Chandrashila. Descend to Chopta for a quiet afternoon.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Deoria Tal

Drive down the road towards Sari and walk to Deoria Tal, about 3 km, in the morning for the clearest reflections. Return to the road and continue to your next stop.

Deoria Tal2 to 3 hours return from SariModerateEarly morning in April to June and October to November

Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.

With parents at Deoria Tal: The trail from Sari is a short uphill walk of about 3 km, which many older travellers manage slowly with rests. There are few seats, the surface is uneven and cloud can arrive quickly. Choose dry weather and sturdy shoes.

Pacing

Pacing a Chopta trip for parents and children

  • Treat Tungnath as optional. The altitude and steady climb are demanding, and a doctor's check is wise for heart, lung or blood pressure conditions.
  • Spend a night at a lower base such as Ukhimath before going up to Chopta, to let your body adjust.
  • Pony or porter help is usually available at Chopta, but arrange it early and agree the price before you start.
  • Carry warm layers, a windproof jacket, gloves and a rain cover even in summer. Cold nights are normal.
  • Keep medicines, a basic first-aid kit and some cash with you; medical help is distant and signal is patchy.
  • Start walks early in the morning and turn back if cloud, rain or wind builds.
