    Chopta meadow and roadside

Best for: Early starts for Tungnath and Chandrashila

Good to know: Simple guesthouses and camps within a short walk of the trailhead. Facilities are basic, nights are cold and hot water or heating can be limited. Book ahead in peak season.

  2. 02

    Ukhimath

Best for: Older travellers, winter visits and a lower base

Good to know: A town at about 1,311 m with more choice of hotels, shops and a medical facility. It is about 45 km from Chopta by road, so expect a longer drive to the trailhead.

Sights in this area: Chopta Meadows, Deoria Tal, Omkareshwar Temple, Ukhimath

  3. 03

    Best for: Deoria Tal walkers

Before you book

What to check when booking for older travellers

  • Ask for a lift, or a ground-floor room — many heritage hotels have steps and no lift.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the sights you care about, in minutes by road, not kilometres.
  • Prefer free cancellation until close to the date, in case plans or health change.
  • Look for 24-hour reception, in-house dining and a doctor-on-call policy.
  • Read recent reviews for noise — old-city streets and wedding venues can be loud late.
