Chunar is a small riverside town in Mirzapur district, about 30 km from Varanasi, built around a fort on a detached spur of the Vindhya hills. The town sits on the right bank of the Ganga, and the fort looks over a long, slow stretch of the river. It is a quiet place with few services, which is much of its appeal.

The history here is layered. Local legend ties the hill to Vikramaditya of Ujjain and his hermit brother Bhartrihari, while the documented story begins with Sher Shah Suri, continues with the Mughals under Akbar and ends with the East India Company, which used the fort as a depot. Around the base are a Sufi shrine with a sandstone gateway, a Mughal garden tomb dated 1605 and a small British cemetery. Chunar's buff sandstone also links it to the Mauryan pillars of the 3rd century BCE.

Most visitors come as a day trip from Varanasi, and that is the sensible way to do it. The fort involves a real climb, and part of it is a police training school, so plan on a morning rather than a full day. Older travellers should keep to the lower pavilion, the tomb garden and the shrines, and go between November and February. There is no need to stay overnight unless you want a very early start.

One good day

1 day in Chunar

Leave Varanasi early so you reach Chunar Fort by mid-morning, when the stone is still cool. Climb to the Sonwa Mandap and Bhartrihari's samadhi, then walk to the boundary for the Ganga view. Descend for lunch in town, where samosas and lavanglata are the local snacks. In the afternoon visit the Iftikhar Khan tomb garden and, if you like, the British cemetery on the fort road. End at the Qasim Sulemani dargah before driving back, ideally before dusk.

Food to try in Chunar

Food and restaurants

Chunar has no restaurant scene to speak of. Travel guides name samosas and lavanglata, a sweet pastry, as local snacks, and you will find tea stalls and small eateries near the fort road and bus stand. Treat it as a stop for a simple snack rather than a long meal. Bring water and a packed lunch if you are travelling with older parents.

For a proper meal, eat in Varanasi before or after the trip, where hotels and restaurants cater to families and vegetarian diets. If you are sensitive to street food, stick to freshly fried items and bottled water.

Shopping in Chunar

Shopping

The craft Chunar is known for is clay and plaster-of-Paris work: toys, cups, plates and small statues, often called chini mitti. Wikivoyage also lists Chunar stone artefacts. There is no established bazaar for visitors, so look in the town's lanes and around the fort road, and ask locally for makers. Prices are not fixed, and quality varies, so choose pieces that are sturdy enough to carry.

For a wider choice of textiles, silks and handicrafts, Varanasi is the better place to shop on the same trip.

Choose without overthinking

Which Chunar experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Chunar Fort or the Iftikhar Khan tomb, if time is short?

Choose the fort for the Ganga view and the pavilion, but only if you can manage a climb. Choose the tomb garden if you want a level, shaded, quiet stop; it takes about 45 minutes.

Chunar as a day trip or an overnight stay?

A day trip from Varanasi is better for most. Accommodation in Chunar is limited and basic, and the sights take half a day. Stay only if you want a very early start.

Chunar or Sarnath for a first Varanasi-area day out?

Sarnath is easier and more famous, with a museum and stupas. Chunar is quieter and suits history readers who enjoy forts. Together they make a good two-day pairing.

Fort climb or lower sights only?

If you have knee or heat concerns, see the Sonwa Mandap, tomb garden and dargah and skip the longer fort walk. If you are fit, add the boundary view over the Ganga.
