Plan 01

1 day in Chunar

  1. 01

Day 1: Fort, tomb and river

Leave Varanasi early so you reach Chunar Fort by mid-morning, when the stone is still cool. Climb to the Sonwa Mandap and Bhartrihari's samadhi, then walk to the boundary for the Ganga view. Descend for lunch in town, where samosas and lavanglata are the local snacks. In the afternoon visit the Iftikhar Khan tomb garden and, if you like, the British cemetery on the fort road. End at the Qasim Sulemani dargah before driving back, ideally before dusk.

    StopTime neededWalkingBest time
Chunar Fort2 to 3 hoursDemandingNovember to February, in the morning; the sandstone ramparts hold heat from March
Sonwa Mandap20 to 30 minutesModerateMorning, October to March

Pace: Chunar Fort involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.

With parents at Chunar Fort: The approach is a climb on stone ramps and steps with little shade and almost no seating. Older visitors can stay with the lower courtyards and pavilion, but anyone with knee or breathing trouble should plan on short stretches and rest stops.

With parents at Sonwa Mandap: Once you are through the fort gate the pavilion floor is level, but you reach it by climbing ramps and steps. There are shaded stone edges to rest on, and no formal seating, so carry a cushion or fold-up stool if you need one.

Plan 02

2 days around Chunar

  1. 01

Day 1: The fort and its pavilions

Spend the morning at Chunar Fort, taking the climb slowly, and see the Sonwa Mandap and samadhi. Rest through the middle of the day. Visit the British cemetery on the fort road in the late afternoon.

Day 2: Tomb, dargah and stone

Start in the Iftikhar Khan garden, then visit the Qasim Sulemani dargah. If a local driver can take you, add the Baragaon quarry area for the Chunar sandstone story, then return towards Varanasi.

Plan 03

3 days with Varanasi

  1. 01

    Day 1: Varanasi first

Use the first day in Varanasi to rest and see the ghats at your own pace; Chunar is easier with a clear day ahead.

  2. 02

    Day 2: Chunar

Do the fort, Sonwa Mandap, tomb garden and dargah in one unhurried day trip by car, returning by evening.

  3. 03

    Day 3: Sarnath

Return to the stone story at Sarnath, where a railing of Chunar sandstone with Mauryan polish survives at the Dhamek Stupa complex, and finish with a gentle Varanasi evening.

Guides for the stops on these routes

Pacing

Pacing a Chunar trip for parents and children

  • Go between November and February; the fort ramps are exposed and hot from March.
  • Do the fort first thing in the morning and keep the garden tomb and dargah for the afternoon.
  • Skip the upper fort if you have knee or breathing trouble; the Sonwa Mandap and tomb garden are the main rewards.
  • Carry water, a hat and any medication; shops and toilets are scarce inside the fort.
  • Hire a car from Varanasi so you have a cool place to rest between stops.
  • Wear shoes with grip for stone ramps and uneven garden paths.
