The short answer

Churdhar Peak Trek: what visitors should know first

Go if you are fit and want a first high-altitude walk close to the plains. It is an easy-to-moderate trek in season, but the Nohradhar route is long and steep in parts. Snow closes it in winter for inexperienced walkers.

History and context

The story behind Churdhar Peak Trek

George Everest took astronomical readings from the peak around 1834, as part of the survey of India.

Why it matters

Why Churdhar Peak Trek is worth your time

Churdhar is the highest peak in Sirmaur district and in the outer Himalayas, so it gives mountain scenery within a day's drive of Chandigarh and Shimla. For many Himachal families it is also a pilgrimage, with the shrine of Shirgul Maharaj on the way.

The trek is a good first step for walkers who want altitude without technical terrain. The key is to respect the weather and the season, since the same trail that is a pleasant two-day walk in June is a hard snow route in January.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Two start points

Nohradhar gives a longer climb; Sarain gives a shorter, gentler approach.

  2. 02

    Open ridges

Above the forest the trail runs over grassy ridges with wide views.

  3. 03

    Summit temple

The temple complex is the goal of both routes and offers basic shelter.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

There are two common ways up. The Nohradhar route is longer, with figures between about 14 and 18 km each way depending on the source, and starts with a steep, rocky section before settling into forest. The Sarain route near Chaupal is shorter, at roughly 7 to 8 km, and is the one the Himachal tourism listing describes as an easy two-day trek, with the landmarks Kharach and Kalabag on the way.

Most people walk up on day one, spend the night at the temple complex and descend on day two. Start early, carry water and wind-proof layers, and expect snow and ice on the upper slopes in winter. The upper part of the trail is open grass with views over the ranges, and the temple sits close to the top.

Book transport to the road head in advance, and tell the temple caretaker or a local guide your plan. The tourism listing shows the trek as open from mid-May to mid-October in 2022 dates, so check the current window before you travel.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Choose the Sarain route if you want the shorter walk
  • Start early and carry water and wind-proof layers
  • Check the current trail window before you travel
  • Tell the temple caretaker your plan
  • Keep a spare day in case of weather
