Churdhar is a 3,647 m peak on the border of Sirmaur and Shimla districts, the highest point in Sirmaur and in the outer Himalayas. Around it lies the 56 sq km Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary, notified in 1985, with forests of deodar and oak, grassy ridges and wildlife that includes black bear, musk deer and leopard.

The mountain is also sacred. A shrine at its top is dedicated to Shirgul Maharaj, also called Chureshwar Maharaj, worshipped across Sirmaur and Chaupal, and pilgrims walk up to it from two sides: Nohradhar in the south and Sarain near Chaupal in the north. George Everest took astronomical readings from the summit in the 1830s.

There is no tourist town here. Visitors base themselves at Rajgarh and Nohradhar, or at Sarain, and walk. The trek takes two days in season and is a good first altitude walk for fit travellers, while the quieter side trips are the Maa Bhangayani temple at Haripurdhar and the apple orchards of Chaupal.

It rewards planning. The road in is long, services are thin, and snow closes the upper trail in winter, but in April to June and September to November the mountain is clear and calm.

Food to try in Churdhar

Food and restaurants

Food here is simple hill fare served in rest houses, homestays and a few dhabas: dal, rice, rotis, vegetables, rajma and tea. Sirmaur's cooking is shaped by the hills and farms, and the Rajgarh area is known for peaches and other orchard fruit in season. Temple shelters on the mountain may offer basic meals, but carry snacks, dry fruit and water. Tell your host about dietary needs a day ahead.

Choose without overthinking

Which Churdhar experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Nohradhar or Sarain route?

Sarain, near Chaupal, is shorter at about 7 to 8 km and is listed as an easy two-day trek. Nohradhar is longer, 14 to 18 km, and steep at the start. Choose Sarain for ease and Nohradhar for a fuller day on the mountain.

Summit trek or Haripurdhar temple?

Pick the trek for the mountain and the Shirgul Maharaj shrine. Pick Haripurdhar if you prefer a road trip and a temple stay.

Summer or winter?

April to June and September to November are clear and workable. Winter gives snow and cold, and needs experience and gear.

Churdhar travel tips

  1. 01

    Season

Plan April to June or September to November. Avoid July and August, and winter unless experienced with snow.

  2. 02

    Permits and fees

Fees are not published in sources we can cite. Confirm with the forest department and the temple committee.

  3. 03

    Road

Roads to Nohradhar and Haripurdhar are narrow and slow, and poor in the monsoon. Keep a spare day.

  4. 04

    Cash and signal

Carry cash. Mobile signal is patchy on the mountain.

  5. 05

    Cold

Nights at the temple are cold even in summer. Carry warm layers and a torch.

  6. 06

    Water and waste

Carry enough water and take all waste down.

  7. 07

    Etiquette

Dress modestly at shrines, remove footwear and ask before photographing.

Churdhar with elderly parents: what to know

  • Choose the shorter Sarain route over the longer Nohradhar route.
  • Take two nights on the way up to adjust to altitude if you are over 60 or have heart or lung issues.
