Before you go
Churdhar with elderly parents: what to know
- Choose the shorter Sarain route over the longer Nohradhar route.
- Take two nights on the way up to adjust to altitude if you are over 60 or have heart or lung issues.
- Carry warm layers, regular medicines and a torch, as the shelter is basic.
- Consider Haripurdhar and Rajgarh instead of the summit if fitness is limited.
- Avoid July-August, when roads and trails are slippery.
Easiest first
Places in Churdhar sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (1)
- Rajgarh and Nohradhar (Places to visit · 1 night as a base) — Mostly level village lanes and road, though travel in is long and winding. Altitude is moderate, so comfort is fair for older visitors if they rest.
Some walking — plan a break (2)
- Maa Bhangayani Temple, Haripurdhar (Places of worship · 1-2 hours at the temple; plan a day for the drive) — The road is the hard part: narrow, winding and slow. At the temple there are stairs and cold air at about 2,500 m, with basic rooms for pilgrims.
- Sarain and Bijat Maharaj Temple (Places of worship · 1 hour) — The village lies on sloping ground and the trek beyond is demanding, but the temple itself is a short walk from the road.
Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (3)
- Churdhar Peak Trek (Places to visit · 2 days, sometimes 3) — The climb is long and the summit is cold and windy. Older visitors should only attempt it with good fitness and a medical check; the shorter Sarain route is gentler than the Nohradhar one.
- Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · 2 days for the trek; a half-day for lower forest walks) — Everything inside is on foot on forest trails and a long climb to about 3,647 m. Older visitors are better off with the lower forest near the road heads than the summit trek.
- Shirgul Maharaj Temple, Churdhar (Places of worship · 1-2 hours at the shrine; overnight if staying) — The temple can only be reached after a long climb, with no road. Some pilgrims go with local help, but older visitors should plan carefully and rest.

Practical tips for Churdhar
- Season. Plan April to June or September to November. Avoid July and August, and winter unless experienced with snow.
- Permits and fees. Fees are not published in sources we can cite. Confirm with the forest department and the temple committee.
- Road. Roads to Nohradhar and Haripurdhar are narrow and slow, and poor in the monsoon. Keep a spare day.
- Cash and signal. Carry cash. Mobile signal is patchy on the mountain.
- Cold. Nights at the temple are cold even in summer. Carry warm layers and a torch.
- Water and waste. Carry enough water and take all waste down.
- Etiquette. Dress modestly at shrines, remove footwear and ask before photographing.
