The short answer

Maa Bhangayani Temple, Haripurdhar: what visitors should know first

Go if you want a quiet pilgrimage and a drive into Sirmaur's high country. The road is long and narrow, and poor in the rains, so plan a full day or overnight rather than a quick detour from Churdhar.

History and context

The story behind Maa Bhangayani Temple, Haripurdhar

Haripurdhar was formerly called Dungbhangayani and served as a summer capital of Sirmaur. Early Sirmaur rulers built a fort called Killa on the ridge to guard the state's edge against Jubbal, with which it had frequent boundary disputes. The fort is now largely abandoned.

Local tradition says Shirgul Maharaj was imprisoned by a Mughal king and released with the help of Bhangayani, who is therefore honoured as his sister.

Why it matters

Why Maa Bhangayani Temple, Haripurdhar is worth your time

Maa Bhangayani is described as the most powerful goddess of Sirmaur, and the temple is tied by legend to Shirgul Maharaj of Churdhar, who she is said to have helped. The two shrines form a pair in local devotion.

Haripurdhar was also the summer capital of Sirmaur, which was then known as Dungbhangayani. Visiting gives a sense of how religion, royal history and high ridge geography overlap in this corner of Himachal.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Haripurdhar lies on a high ridge, and the main road approach is about 140 km from Shimla via Solan and Rajgarh, roughly seven hours, on a narrow road that is poor in the monsoon. The alternative via Chaupal is much longer. Start early and allow for slow traffic.

The temple is a place of active worship. Remove footwear, cover shoulders and knees, and follow local devotees on the circuit and offerings. The temple premises have roughly 30 basic rooms, and the town has a few hotels and a guest house, so an overnight is realistic.

If you have time, look at the ridge where the old fort, Killa, once guarded the Sirmaur frontier; its habitable part now houses forest staff. An annual fair draws large crowds, so go outside those days for quiet or during them for atmosphere.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Allow most of a day for the drive
  • Avoid the monsoon when the road is worst
  • Dress modestly and remove footwear
  • Confirm rooms with the temple trust
  • Carry warm clothes; evenings are cold
