Why it matters
Why Anamalai Tiger Reserve and Top Slip is worth your time
The Anamalai hills are one of the richest forests of the Western Ghats, and the reserve protects rare species such as the Nilgiri tahr and lion-tailed macaque. For visitors it is the best chance in the Coimbatore region to see large wildlife and forest rather than a built monument.
It is also a working landscape with hills, reservoirs, tea and coffee estates and timber history. Even if you do not see a tiger, the drive and the scenery give a sense of the region beyond the city.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat this as a full-day trip with a driver. The reserve covers about 1,480 sq km of forest in the Anamalai hills, with Top Slip as the main tourist area, in the north-east corner. The name comes from the 19th-century practice of sliding timber logs down the slopes.
The reserve is home to elephants, gaur, leopards, tigers, Nilgiri tahr, lion-tailed macaques and many birds, but sightings are never guaranteed. Take binoculars, a hat and water, and be quiet. Forest-department vehicles and guides are normally required for wildlife areas.
Because the drive is long, start early and plan lunch before or after, as facilities inside are limited. Eachanari Vinayagar temple is a natural stop on the Pollachi road.
