The short answer
Nanjarayan Tank Bird Sanctuary: what visitors should know first
Worth a morning if you enjoy birds and can go between October and March. The sanctuary is young and lightly developed, with visiting arrangements not published, so confirm access with the forest department and expect a simple, rural outing.
History and context
The story behind Nanjarayan Tank Bird Sanctuary
The Tamil Nadu government announced a bird sanctuary at Nanjarayan tank in 2022 and issued a government order that September, making it the state's 17th. Reports before 2015 recorded more than 22,000 migratory birds in peak seasons, with 181 species recorded overall; numbers have since fallen, which conservationists link to desilting work in 2015 and to changing conditions.
The wetland was designated a Ramsar site on 16 January 2024. It is managed by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department and is named after King Nanjarayan, who repaired and restored the lake.

Why it matters
Why Nanjarayan Tank Bird Sanctuary is worth your time
Nanjarayan is a working irrigation tank that became a protected wetland, a reminder that much of Tamil Nadu's birdlife depends on village water bodies rather than grand reserves. It is named after King Nanjarayan, who is said to have restored the lake.
Its value has been formally recognised: the Tamil Nadu government made it the state's 17th bird sanctuary in 2022, and it was designated a Ramsar site of international importance in January 2024. For a Coimbatore trip centred on temples and hills, it offers an easy contrast, and a chance to see how a protected wetland sits beside a busy textile town.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
Winter migrants
From October to March the tank draws waterbirds from far afield, including bar-headed geese and northern shovelers.
- 02
Pelicans and herons
Spot-billed pelicans and several heron species are among the birds recorded. Early morning gives the best chance of seeing them feeding.
- 03
A Ramsar wetland
The site gained international recognition in 2024, so it is worth seeing as an example of a protected village tank.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Leave Coimbatore early and drive east towards Tiruppur, then on to the Uthukuli side, where the tank lies a short distance off the Tiruppur-Uthukuli road. Aim to arrive soon after sunrise, when waterbirds are most active and the light is soft. A hired car with a driver is the practical way to do this.
The tank is a large, shallow wetland of roughly 126 hectares, so scan the water edges and shallows with binoculars from the bunds rather than expecting close views. Species recorded here include bar-headed goose, northern shoveler, spot-billed pelican and several herons. Numbers have varied a great deal; a count of over 20,000 migrants a season was reported before 2015, and more recent figures are far lower, so go for the setting and what you see on the day.
Carry water, a hat and snacks, and keep to existing paths. Because the sanctuary was notified only in 2022 and is still being developed, check with the forest office about access, and combine the trip with a meal in Tiruppur or back in Coimbatore.
