Why it matters
Why The Gallery Cafe is worth your time
Colombo has few places where the setting is part of the reason to eat. Two pages agree on the Alfred House Road address, and Wikivoyage links the building to Geoffrey Bawa, the architect behind much of Sri Lanka's modern design.
For a family, it is a pause between sights rather than a dedicated Sri Lankan meal. It suits travellers who want a café with seating and a menu that does not require adventurous eating.

How to experience it
Wikivoyage lists The Gallery Cafe at 2 Alfred House Road in Kollupitiya, in a building by the architect Geoffrey Bawa, with a large international menu, desserts and cocktails. TravelTriangle gives the same address, describes a cafe in a walled garden with cakes, and lists baked crab and a tamarind chilli margarita as must-tries.
Because the menu is international, vegetarians and others with dietary limits have more room to choose, but we found no menu naming vegetarian dishes. Ask staff what is meat-free and what is cooked with egg. The restaurant also serves alcohol, which some families may want to know in advance.
Pick a quiet hour for conversation. Spend the first part of the visit in the garden if the weather allows, then move indoors if it gets hot.
