The short answer

Green Life Vegetarian Cuisine: what visitors should know first

Worth knowing if you are in Kotahena and want vegetarian Indian food. A Yamu first-look review from 2020 found a short menu, some items unavailable and a few over-sweet dishes, so treat it as a plain, practical meal and confirm it is open before travelling.

Why it matters

Why Green Life Vegetarian Cuisine is worth your time

Vegetarian Indian food is not easy to find in Colombo, where rice and curry plates commonly include fish, meat or dried fish. Green Life is one of the few places in the Kotahena area that a review describes as fully vegetarian, which makes it a practical fallback for families who would otherwise search for a meal.

Its value is convenience and familiarity rather than polish. The same reviewers who praised the surprising interior also marked down a soggy dosai and a too-sweet juice, and the piece was a first-look rather than a full review. We have not tagged it Pure Veg, because the page says vegetarian and does not address egg, so confirm that with staff if it matters to you.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Paper masala dosai

Served with a spicy potato filling, dhal and curries; the portion was large enough for a full meal.

  2. 02

    Vegetable biryani

Basmati with carrots and cauliflower and a chilli-spiked raita, found slightly sweet.

  3. 03

    Meat-free curries

Potato and paneer stand in for meat in North Indian gravies; ask how sweet or spicy they run.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Order the dishes the reviewers actually tried: a paper masala dosai with its potato filling and dhal, or a vegetable biryani with raita. The biryani was described as golden basmati with carrots and cauliflower, a little sweeter than usual, and the raita carried crushed green chilli for heat.

The menu is short and covers South and North Indian items, with potatoes or paneer taking the place of meat in curries. Aloo butter masala and similar gravies were found moderately spiced and noticeably sweet, so say if you prefer less sweetness. Tea is sweet and milky.

The review noted that staff were unsure of the menu and that several items, especially drinks, were unavailable on the visit. Go with some flexibility, order two or three dishes to share between the family, and ask what is ready before you settle on your order. This is a plain meal, not a destination dinner.

Plan with confidence

Small checks that make a better meal.

  • Call or ask your hotel to confirm it is open
  • Ask which dishes are available before ordering
  • Ask about egg, onion and garlic if you are strict
  • Share dishes to taste more of the menu

FAQs

Is Green Life fully vegetarian?

The Yamu review describes it as fully vegetarian. It does not say whether egg is excluded, so we have not tagged it Pure Veg; ask staff.

Is it Jain or vegan?

We found no evidence of either. Indian gravies and dosai may include ghee, dairy and onion, so ask before ordering.
