Hotel de Pilawoos, Colombo: What to eat and visitor guide

A casual Galle Road eatery that guides name for cheese kottu, parata and late-night roti. It is a meat-friendly, no-frills stop, not a quiet sit-down meal.

The short answer

Hotel de Pilawoos: what visitors should know first

Go if you want to taste kottu where Colombo locals eat it, ideally with a younger companion who can handle the noise. Vegetarians should ask which items are meat-free; we found no vegetarian-only evidence.

Why it matters

Why Hotel de Pilawoos is worth your time

Kottu is the dish many visitors ask about in Colombo, and Hotel de Pilawoos is one of the few casual places that three separate pages name for it. That makes it a fair stand-in for the everyday eating of the city, away from hotel dining rooms and set menus.

It will not suit everyone. The food is meat-led, the setting is simple and the reputation rests on late-night, after-an-outing eating. For a family with older travellers it works best as a brief tasting stop, or as takeaway to eat back at the hotel, rather than the main meal of the day.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Two guides that we opened, a Sri Lanka food page and Wikivoyage, name Hotel de Pilawoos as a Galle Road stop, and a third lists the same Galle Road address. They describe plain, popular food: cheese kottu, which is sliced roti chopped on a hot plate with cheese and fillings, plus parata, chicken roti and palandi (a chicken dish). Wikivoyage mentions chicken roti and iced Milo as a late-night habit.

The menu leans heavily on meat, so a vegetarian should ask staff plainly what is cooked without meat, fish or egg and how it is prepared. We found no menu proving any vegetarian dish, so we give no diet tag. If you eat only vegetarian food, Colombo's dedicated vegetarian restaurants on this site are a safer choice.

This is a place for a short, cheap meal rather than a long lunch. Order one dish to share first, then add more if the table wants it. Choose a time when you are not tired, since the street outside is a main road with heavy traffic.

Plan with confidence

Small checks that make a better meal.

  • Confirm opening hours before a late visit
  • Ask staff which dishes are meat-free
  • Take a taxi, not a walk, along Galle Road
  • Share one dish first, then order more
