Why it matters
Why Nuga Gama, Cinnamon Grand is worth your time
Many Indian visitors reach Colombo expecting dishes like their own and find Sri Lankan food is a separate cuisine, built on coconut, pol sambol and hoppers. A themed restaurant that is set up for visitors is an easy way to try it without picking through street stalls.
It is a hotel meal, so expect hotel prices and a sheltered, easier experience. For a family with older relatives that comfort is part of the value, though it is less raw than the Pettah and Wellawatte cafes listed elsewhere in this guide.

How to experience it
Time Out describes Nuga Gama as a village-themed restaurant centred on a banyan (nuga) tree, with a kitchen that guests can visit. The Cinnamon Hotels blog says the setting has a village feel and lists hoppers, kottu roti, pani pol and milk hoppers. Another guide mentions a dinner buffet with live cooking stations and dishes such as jackfruit seed curry.
The pages differ on whether the evening is buffet or à la carte, so ask when you book. Tell the staff about your diet in advance. Sri Lankan cooking uses coconut, fish and meat widely, and a hotel kitchen can usually name which curries are vegetable-only if asked, but we did not find a menu confirming this.
Go hungry and pace yourself. Start with a hopper or two, then try a vegetable or jackfruit curry. If the day has been hot, ask for an indoor table.
