Colva is the best-known beach on South Goa's coast. The sand runs for about 2.4 km along the Arabian Sea, part of a much longer ribbon of beach that extends down this stretch of the Konkan coast. It sits in Salcete taluka, about 6 km from Margao, the district's commercial town. The beach is wide, level and easy to reach, with a village of guesthouses, small resorts, shops and shacks right behind it, so most people can walk from bed to sand in a few minutes.
The feel is Indian holiday more than backpacker. Most visitors are domestic travellers, and weekends and festival periods bring a crowd, with food stalls, hawkers and beach activities along the central stretch. If you want quiet, walk towards either end, or visit on a weekday in the morning. The village itself is older than the resort scene: the whitewashed Church of Our Lady of Mercy in the main square dates to the 17th century and still draws pilgrims every October.
The water is the part to treat with care. State-appointed lifeguards patrol the major beaches, red flags mean stay out, and swimming, coastal water sports and fishing are prohibited during the monsoon, roughly June to August or longer depending on the year's notice. From about November to March the sea is usually kinder, shacks are open and the weather is dry. Beach shacks are licensed seasonally, so the choice of where to eat changes from one season to the next.
As a base, Colva suits three-to-four-night stays and short trips. Margao's market and churches, Benaulim's quieter sand and the museum at Goa Chitra are all close, and Old Goa is a longer day out. The pace here is gentle, the walking is flat, and there are plenty of places to sit.
