Before you go
Colva Beach with elderly parents: what to know
- Walk on the firm wet sand near the waterline rather than the soft dry sand, and carry a small folding stool or ask your hotel for sun-lounger access.
- Plan beach time before about 10 am and after about 4 pm; the middle of the day is hot and humid even in winter.
- Choose a hotel within a short, level walk of the beach and ask whether it has lifts or ground-floor rooms.
- Never swim beyond the lifeguard-marked area, obey red flags, and do not enter the water in the monsoon.
- Use hired taxis or autos for Margao and Benaulim and agree the fare before you start; a car with a driver is easiest for day trips.
- Check a beach shack is open and has seating with a back rest before you walk down; many are plastic chairs on sand.
Easiest first
Places in Colva Beach sorted by walking effort
Easy on the legs (5)
- Church of Our Lady of Mercy (Places of worship · 30 to 45 minutes) — The churchyard and interior are mostly level, with benches inside. The village square can be busy with traffic and, in October, large crowds. Take an auto from the beach if the walk is long in the heat.
- Cremeux Pizza & Bakery Cafe (Food and restaurants · 30 to 60 minutes) — It is on the beach road, which is level and walkable from many hotels. Look for seating with a back rest and a fan or air-conditioning if the weather is hot. Staff can usually offer a quieter table inside.
- Martin's Corner (Food and restaurants · 1.5 to 2 hours) — Dining areas are on level ground with proper tables and chairs, which suits older diners better than sand-floor shacks. Weekend evenings are loud and busy, so a weekday lunch is calmer. Check for steps at the entrance and ask for a table near the door if mobility is limited.
- Mon Petit Frère (Food and restaurants · 45 minutes to 1.5 hours) — The garden has shade and tables on level ground, which is easier on older visitors than sand seating. The lane from the beach road to the church area can have scooter traffic, so take an auto if the walk feels long in the heat.
- The Red Ginger (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Seating is a mix of indoor and outdoor tables on level ground, so it is usually easy for older guests. Parking is reported to be limited, so expect to walk or take an auto. Music nights can be loud, so ask about the evening schedule if you want quiet.
Some walking — plan a break (4)
- Colva Beach Water Sports (Sports · 30 to 60 minutes) — Rides need boarding from the sand or the shallows, which is hard on knees and balance. Older travellers can watch from the sand or choose a gentle banana boat ride, with life jackets and staff help. Do not ride if you have heart or back problems without medical advice.
- Goa Chitra Museum (Culture and craft · 1.5 to 2 hours) — Parts of the museum are indoors and shaded, but the grounds involve walking on uneven paths. Expect some standing and walking, and ask about guided access and seating.
- Margao Municipal Market (Shopping · 1.5 to 2 hours) — Floors can be wet and uneven, lanes are narrow and the market is busy. Older travellers may prefer a short visit with a guide or family member, taking regular breaks and avoiding peak hours.
- Silver Spoon Shack (Food and restaurants · 1 to 1.5 hours) — Shack seating is on sand with plastic or wooden chairs, and many have no back rests. Walking on soft sand is tiring for those with knee or balance issues, so ask for a table at the edge of the sand and go before dark. Toilets can be basic.

Practical tips for Colva Beach
- Swimming. Lifeguards patrol major Goa beaches in season. Swim only in the marked area, obey red flags and keep children close. In the monsoon, sea swimming, coastal water sports and fishing are prohibited.
- Heat and sun. Even in winter the midday sun is strong and the humidity high. Use a hat, sunscreen and plenty of water, and keep the middle of the day for a rest in your room.
- Getting around. The beach road is walkable; for Margao, Benaulim and Old Goa use a taxi, auto or hired car. Agree the fare before starting, or use a booking app.
- Shacks and seasons. Shacks are licensed seasonally, roughly October to May, and can change hands. Check that the place you want is open, and ask the price of seafood sold by weight before ordering.
- Money. Carry some cash for stalls, autos and shacks, since not everyone accepts cards or UPI reliably. Count change and keep small notes.
- Dress and churches. Beachwear is fine on the sand but cover shoulders and knees for the church and Margao. Remove sandals only where asked.
- Crowds. Weekends, Christmas to New Year and the October Fama bring heavy crowds. Weekday mornings are calm. Book rooms well in advance at peak times.
- Photography and hawkers. Ask before photographing people, especially fishermen. Politely decline hawkers and keep valuables out of sight on the sand.
