The short answer

Law's Falls: what visitors should know first

A decent stop if you are driving the ghat road down to Mettupalayam, or have an hour spare. It is about 7 km from Coonoor and best in or just after the rains; in the dry months the flow thins and it is not worth a special trip.

History and context

The story behind Law's Falls

The falls are said to be named after Colonel Law, who was responsible for building the Coonoor ghat road, the main pass between the plains and the Nilgiris built in the early 1830s.

Why it matters

Why Law's Falls is worth your time

The falls are named after Colonel Law, who was involved in building the Coonoor ghat road, according to travel press. That road was the main pass from the plains to the Nilgiris, and it is the reason Coonoor developed as a hill station in the early 19th century.

Seeing the falls is therefore a small piece of road history as well as scenery. It also gives a quieter alternative to the more famous waterfalls in the district, and is a good example of the shola forest that still clings to the steeper slopes here.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    The fall in the forest

A tall, narrow drop framed by shola forest, best after a few days of rain.

  2. 02

    On the ghat road

It sits beside the historic road down to the plains, so it fits a drive rather than a trek.

  3. 03

    Quieter than Catherine Falls

Fewer visitors make it a calmer stop if you have already seen the better-known falls.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Law's Falls lies about 7 km out of Coonoor on the road towards Mettupalayam, so the easiest way to see it is to ask a driver to stop on a downhill run, or on the way back from a day trip. The fall is reported at about 180 feet, dropping through undisturbed shola forest.

There is not a lot to do beyond looking, listening and taking photographs, so give it forty-five minutes at most. Visit in or just after the monsoon months for a full flow; the falls thin out in dry spells.

Do not enter the water or climb past any barriers. The rocks are slippery and the flow rises quickly after rain. Keep the car close by, and if clouds are building, leave rather than wait.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check the flow before you go; it thins in dry weeks
  • Stay out of the water and off wet rocks
  • Watch for traffic when crossing the road
  • Combine it with a drive down the ghat
  • Carry your own water and snacks
