Coonoor sits at about 1,850 metres in the Nilgiris, roughly 17 km from Ooty and several hundred metres lower. That difference matters: the air is a little milder, the streets a little quieter, and the surrounding hills are covered in tea and coffee estates rather than holiday crowds. Under British rule it became the terminus of the Nilgiri branch of the railway, and the Coonoor ghat road, cut in the early 1830s, was the main pass from the plains to the hills.
The town works best for travellers who like to do one thing a day. Sim's Park, laid out in 1874, is a ravine garden with over a thousand plant species. The viewpoints on the eastern ridge, Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose, look across gorges to Catherine Falls and out over the Coimbatore plains. A guided tea-factory visit explains the terraces you see from every road, and the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, which runs through Coonoor station, adds a slow, heritage option.
It is a good base for older travellers and families, provided you plan around the weather. The skies are clearest from January to March, May has the fruit show, and October and November bring the heaviest rain of the year. Roads are steep and winding, and some of the best views involve short but uneven walks, so choose a hotel in Upper Coonoor with car access and keep afternoons free.
Many visitors treat Coonoor as a day trip from Ooty. Staying two or three nights lets you see it at a slower pace, with morning viewpoints, an afternoon tea-estate visit and one gentle train or garden hour.
