Day 1: Viewpoints, tea and a garden
Start early with Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose on the same road, which gives the clearest views before cloud builds. Return for lunch, then visit Highfield Tea Estate for a guided factory tour and tasting. Finish at Sim's Park in the late afternoon, or watch the train arrive at Coonoor station if the weather is poor.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Lamb's Rock 30 to 60 minutes Moderate Clear mornings; January to March for visibility Dolphin's Nose 1 to 2 hours including the drive from town Moderate Early morning on a clear day; January to March gives the best visibility Highfield Tea Estate About 1 hour Easy Weekday morning; January to March for the 'frost tea' flush Sim's Park 1 to 1.5 hours Moderate Morning on a dry day; May for the fruit and vegetable show; January to March for clearer skies Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Lamb's Rock: From the road the walk to the viewpoint is short but on uneven ground, with a sheer drop beyond the rock. Older visitors can enjoy the view from the nearer ledges and rest on the road side, but should avoid venturing onto the cliff edges.
With parents at Dolphin's Nose: The drive is easy but twisty. From the parking area the walk to the viewpoint is short, yet the rock surfaces are uneven and the drop is steep, so older visitors should go slowly and may prefer the lower safe vantage points. Monkeys are reported around the stalls.

Day 2: Garden and railway
Spend the morning at Sim's Park, then visit Coonoor station and, if timings suit, ride a short section of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway towards Ooty. Stop for varkey and tea at a bakery in the lower town.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Sim's Park 1 to 1.5 hours Moderate Morning on a dry day; May for the fruit and vegetable show; January to March for clearer skies Pace: Moderate walking today — plan a sit-down break between stops.
With parents at Sim's Park: The paths slope down into a ravine and back up, with some steps and uneven edges. Benches and lawns are easy to find, so a short loop near the entrance works well for older visitors; the lower shola paths are best skipped if knees are a worry.

Day 3: Railway or trek
Fit walkers can take on Droog Fort with an early start and a guide. Everyone else can ride a short stretch of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, visit the lower-town bakery, and rest.
Stop Time needed Walking Best time Droog Fort Most of a day, including the drive Demanding Early start on a dry day; winter is gentler than summer Pace: Droog Fort involves a lot of walking or steps — do it early, and keep the rest of the day light.
With parents at Droog Fort: Not suitable for most older travellers. The walk is long, exposed and on rough ground, with no seating, shelter or toilets at the top. Older visitors can enjoy the tea-estate views from the road instead and leave the climb to the fit.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Coonoor trip for parents and children
- Choose a hotel in Upper Coonoor with car access to the door, and ask for a ground-floor room or cottage close to reception.
- Do viewpoints in the morning when visibility is best, and rest after lunch; cloud and rain build in the afternoon.
- Sim's Park, Highfield Tea Estate and Coonoor station are the easiest sights; Droog Fort is not suitable for most older travellers.
- Viewpoints such as Dolphin's Nose have steep drops and uneven rock; stay behind railings and move slowly.
- For the toy train, ride the shorter Coonoor to Ooty section rather than the full line from Mettupalayam.
- Carry a warm layer and a rain jacket in all months, and avoid October and November if you are nervous about wet, winding roads.
