Why it matters
Why Jathra Waterfalls is worth your time
Jathra Waterfalls represents Coorg's forest ecology in a less visited form. Unlike Abbey Falls, which is easily accessible and developed for tourism, Jathra requires more effort to reach and remains relatively quiet. This helps preserve the sense of the waterfall as part of a wild forest system, not just a tourist site.
The waterfall is fed by monsoon rains and the water table of the Western Ghats, and it supports ecosystems of fish, amphibians and insects that depend on clean, flowing water. Visiting Jathra helps you understand the importance of protecting Coorg's forest streams.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
From Madikeri, drive south toward Jathra village, passing through coffee and spice plantations. After about 25 km and asking locals for directions, you reach a point where a forest path begins. Leave your vehicle here and walk down the forest path, which descends gradually through thick vegetation, coffee plants and occasional forest clearings.
After about 45 minutes to an hour of walking, you will hear the sound of falling water and reach the first of the Jathra cascades. The water falls in a series of steps rather than one straight drop, forming pools at different levels. The lowest and largest pool is the destination for most visitors. Sit here for 20–30 minutes, watch the water, feel the mist and listen to the sound. The forest around the falls is lush and alive with birdcalls.
The return walk is uphill and slower, taking 1 to 1.5 hours. Pace yourself and rest as needed.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.
- Wear waterproof hiking shoes with good grip; the path is often muddy and slippery
- Go with a local guide if you are unfamiliar with forest paths
- Bring plenty of water; the walk is longer and more exposed than Abbey Falls
- Check the path condition with locals; heavy rain can make it impassable
- Allow 2.5 to 3 hours total: 45 minutes to an hour down, 30–45 minutes by the water, 1 to 1.5 hours back up
