The short answer

Kote Betta Trek: what visitors should know first

A moderate day walk of about 10 km through coffee estates and open slopes to a hilltop temple. It is not on the Forest Department's online booking portals, so check locally that walking is currently allowed before you go. Older parents can see the Hattihole bridge and Mallalli Falls nearby instead.

History and context

The story behind Kote Betta Trek

Kote Betta, 'fort hill', is a peak of about 1,620 m in Kodagu with a Shiva temple on the summit. Local belief holds that the Pandavas spent part of their exile here.

Why it matters

Why Kote Betta Trek is worth your time

Kote Betta is one of the three highest peaks in this part of Kodagu, and its temple and Pandava legend give it local religious meaning beyond trekking. It is less crowded than Tadiandamol and gives a broad view over coffee country.

The lack of a published booking system is the main caution. Karnataka has been moving all forest treks to online booking with guides, and a walk that is tolerated one season may be stopped the next, so check before you set out.

The wooden plank bridge near the start is a pleasant stop in itself.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The usual route starts near the Hattihole bridge, a wooden plank bridge over the Hatti river, and climbs on estate tracks through coffee, spice and jackfruit plantations before opening on to grassy slopes. The summit, at about 1,620 m (about 5,300 ft), has a small Shiva temple and a flat, shaded area for resting.

Travel guides put the walk at about 10 km from the start to the top, and most people allow four to six hours in all. The gradient is steady rather than steep, and from the top the views run in every direction over the Western Ghats.

Because access rules are unclear, go with a local guide or on advice from your homestay, start in the morning, and carry water and food; there are no shops on the hill. Sambar, gaur and mongooses are sometimes seen on the way.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check locally that walking is allowed before setting out
  • Hire a local guide

Timing, access and comfort

Area
Near Hattihole bridge, between Madikeri and Somwarpet
Time needed
Half a day to a full day
Best time
October to February, or spring; summer is hot and the monsoon makes the trail slippery
Walking level
Moderate
Senior comfort
The slope is gentle by Kodagu standards, but the walk is long, on rough estate tracks and open hillside with little shade. Older travellers who walk regularly may manage part of it with a local guide; others are better at the Hattihole bridge or Mallalli Falls nearby while fitter family members walk up.
Tickets and access
Kote Betta does not appear on the Karnataka Forest Department's online trek portals (Aranya Vihaara or the Kodagu eco-tourism booking site) as of October 2026. In 2024 the state paused treks at sites without online booking, and the rules here have not been clearly published since. Ask the Somwarpet or Madikeri forest office, or your homestay, whether walking up is currently permitted, and hire a local guide. Confirm any fees locally.
