How to experience it
The trek starts at the forest checkpost near Talakaveri, about 7 to 8 km by road from Bhagamandala; shared jeeps and autos run up from the town. With a forest guide, the trail goes through shola forest and then along open grass ridges in the Brahmagiri range to a rounded summit at about 1,270 m (4,167 ft).
The round trip is about 14 to 15 km and takes six to eight hours: roughly four to five hours up and two and a half to three down. The final approach is steep and slippery in wet weather. Trekking is allowed only in daylight hours, so start early.
Carry plenty of water, food, sun protection and a rain layer. Elephants, gaur, sambar and wild boar live in this forest, and the guide decides where it is safe to go. Leeches are common from June to September.
