The short answer

Five Falls (Aintharuvi): what visitors should know first

Worth adding to a Main Falls visit if the water is moderate, because the five-stream shape is the point. In dry weeks it is a thin trickle and not worth the drive. Check the bathing status before changing.

Why it matters

Why Five Falls (Aintharuvi) is worth your time

The five separate streams give the falls its Tamil name, Aintharuvi, and make it the place where Courtallam's water looks most like something to look at rather than stand in. That difference is useful when planning, since you can enjoy it without bathing at all.

It also shows how the area is managed. Water access here is run by the town panchayat and forest and horticulture authorities, which is why bans appear and lift at short notice. Seeing the place with that in mind helps you plan flexibly and avoid being caught out at a closed bathing ghat.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Five streams

The shape is clearest at normal flow; it merges in floods and thins in the dry season.

  2. 02

    Garden park next door

Official tourism pages mention a garden park beside the falls, useful for a rest.

  3. 03

    Check the ban

Bathing here was suspended and reopened in August 2026 within days.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Drive out from the Main Falls, which takes only a few minutes; some people walk, but the road has traffic. The falls are best in normal season flow, when the water divides into five separate cascades. In very heavy flow the streams merge and bathing is stopped. In dry weeks there may only be one or two thin ribbons of water.

The district tourism page notes a good parking area, and a horticulture-run eco park beside the falls, which gives a shaded place to sit before or after. Use the same sensible rules as elsewhere here: change in a place that has screening, keep footwear for the walk, and take only what you can carry wet.

If you also plan the Old and Tiger Falls, do Five Falls first and work back toward town so the day ends near your lodging. In August 2026 the bathing ban here was lifted a couple of days after heavy rain, a reminder that the falls can change quickly within one trip.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Take a car or auto; the road is shared with traffic
  • Check bathing is open before you change
  • Pack a dry change of clothes in a bag
  • Do it before Old Falls if you plan a loop
