Courtallam (also spelt Kutralam) sits in the foothills of the Western Ghats in Tenkasi district, at about 160 metres above sea level. It is known for a cluster of waterfalls on the Chittar river, and local tradition treats their water as healthful because it runs through forest and herbs on the way down. For many Tamil families it is the standard monsoon outing, a place to bathe, eat and go to the temple in one day.
The town is small and the sights are close together. The Main Falls drop beside the bus stand and the Kutralanathar temple, a Shiva shrine laid out in the shape of a conch and counted among the Paadal Petra Sthalams. Other falls lie along the road: Chitraruvi nearby, Tiger Falls, Five Falls about 4 km away and Old Falls about 8 km out toward Tenkasi. Some more remote falls are closed to the public, so do not build a plan around them.
Timing matters more here than almost anywhere. The falls depend on the monsoon, so the district tourism pages point to mid-June to September, with a second window from October to January. In heavy flow, bathing is banned for a day or two, and in dry months the water thins out. Be ready to switch plans, and ask locally before you change into bathing clothes.
The area suits families and older travellers who can accept simple facilities. Viewing the falls needs little walking, and the temple is flat. Bathing involves wet steps and queues, with separate lines for men and women, and the town has basic changing arrangements, so travel light. Tenkasi, a short drive away, adds a large temple and good train connections.
