The short answer

Hai Van Pass: what visitors should know first

Yes, if you have a car and driver and a clear day. It suits a half-day trip towards Hue, and drivers know the viewpoints. The old pass has sharp bends and can be misty, so do not attempt it by self-drive scooter if inexperienced.

History and context

The story behind Hai Van Pass

The pass crosses a spur of the Annamite Range that reaches the South China Sea. The old road winds over the mountain, while the Hai Van Tunnel, the longest in South-East Asia, has taken most traffic since it opened. The pass is part of National Route 1.

Why it matters

Why Hai Van Pass is worth your time

Hai Van is often translated as Ocean Cloud, and the pass is the geographic line between northern and southern Vietnam. According to Wikipedia, it forms a boundary between the climates of the two halves: in winter, from November to March, the northern side is typically wet and cold, while the southern side is warm and dry.

The road also carries history, since it was a strategic route for centuries, and today it is among the best-known scenic drives in the country. It was featured in the 2008 Top Gear Vietnam Special. For a traveller from India it is a good reminder of how a short drive can change weather, and why the weather in Da Nang and Hue can differ on the same day.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Ask a driver for a half-day trip to the pass and onward to Lang Co beach or Hue. The old road climbs to about 496 m on the shoulder of Ai Van Son and offers views of Da Nang Bay and the coast, while the modern Hai Van Tunnel, the longest in South-East Asia, bypasses the climb. Wikivoyage notes that buses through the tunnel miss the scenic pass.

Start early, because mist often gathers by mid-morning. Stop at the summit viewpoint for photographs but keep a layer handy since the wind is cooler than the coast. If you continue north, the road drops to Lang Co, a coastal stretch beyond the pass. Rail passengers can see the same coast from the Reunification Express.

Do not rush the bends. The old road can take up to an hour longer than the tunnel, so allow time and do not schedule a tight flight afterwards.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Hire a car with driver
  • Start early to beat the mist
  • Carry a layer and water
  • Allow extra time for the old road
