The short answer
My Khe Beach: what visitors should know first
Yes, for at least one morning or evening, even if you are not a swimmer. Go early, when the sand is cool and locals exercise, and avoid the middle of the day from May to August. Swim only where lifeguards are on duty and the flags allow it.
History and context
The story behind My Khe Beach
During the Vietnam War the American military used the coast around Da Nang for rest and recreation, and the name China Beach comes from that period. Since the 1990s the shoreline has been rebuilt with hotels and resorts, and My Khe is now the centre of the city's tourism.

Why it matters
Why My Khe Beach is worth your time
My Khe sits at the heart of how Da Nang sells itself. Wikivoyage notes that it was called China Beach during the Vietnam War, when American troops came here for rest and recreation, and the city's beaches helped turn it from a port and former air base into a seaside destination. In 2019 The New York Times compared Da Nang to Miami for its beach, bridges and skyline, a label that has stuck.
For a visitor, the beach explains the city: it is a working coast first, with fishing boats and local swimmers at dawn, and a resort strip second. It also sets the rhythm of a trip. If you plan sightseeing in the cooler morning and give the afternoon and evening to the sea front, Da Nang becomes a restful holiday rather than a checklist, which suits families and older parents.
Highlights
What not to miss
- 01
Sunrise on the sand
Local exercise groups, fishermen and soft light on Son Tra Mountain make the first hour the best.
- 02
Fishing boats
Look for the fishing boats pulled up on the sand; they are part of the daily scene, not a staged show.
- 03
Evening promenade
Cooler air, lit hotels and cafes make a gentle walk for older travellers.
Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat My Khe as two beaches in one day. At sunrise the sand belongs to joggers, tai chi groups and fishermen working with their boats, and the light on Son Tra Mountain to the north is soft and clear. This is the time for a slow walk of a kilometre or two on firm sand near the waterline, shoes in hand. By late morning from May to August the sand heats up and the sea fills with families, so move to a shaded cafe on the road behind the beach.
Swimming needs a little care. The surf can be strong, especially at the edges of the wet season, and the beach is staffed in sections by lifeguards. Swim in the flagged area, keep children within arm's reach and do not swim after heavy rain or when a typhoon warning is in the news. Sea bathing is for the drier months; from about September to December the weather turns unpredictable.
In the evening the promenade fills again. Seafood restaurants line the road, but the better way to end the day is a simple walk toward the Son Tra end as the hotels light up. Indian families with older relatives often prefer an evening to the midday glare.
Plan with confidence
Small decisions that make the visit easier.

Timing, access and comfort
- Area
- Along Vo Nguyen Giap Street, east of the city centre
- Time needed
- 1-3 hours
- Best time
- Early morning or late afternoon; the sea is usually calmest in the dry months from about February to August
- Walking level
- Easy
- Senior comfort
- The beach is flat and the promenade-side pavements are level, but there is little shade on the sand and steps down from the road are uneven in places. Older travellers do well with a morning walk, a beach-side chair under an umbrella and a cold drink.
- Tickets and access
- The beach is public and free to walk on. Sun loungers and umbrellas are usually charged by the stall that places them, so agree the price first. Hotels on the strip may let non-guests use their beach area for the cost of a drink or a day pass.
