The short answer

Daman Lighthouse (Old and New): what visitors should know first

A short, scenic stop if you are already in Moti Daman. The old lighthouse is low, and the view over the sea and river mouth is the reward. Allow 20 minutes and check whether the climb is open before you plan around it.

History and context

The story behind Daman Lighthouse (Old and New)

Incredible India describes an old lighthouse built by the Portuguese, which visitors can climb by a spiral staircase, and a newer one built by the Indian government, which is closed to entry for security reasons. Both stand in the Moti Daman Fort complex. I could not confirm construction dates.

Why it matters

Why Daman Lighthouse (Old and New) is worth your time

The lighthouses are small, but they show that Daman was a port before it was a tourist stop. The estuary of the Daman Ganga made this a trading harbour long before the Portuguese arrived, and the lights guided ships in and out of it.

For a visitor the interest is mainly the vantage point and the contrast between the two towers: one a modest colonial structure, the other a modern working aid to navigation. It is a pleasant, low-effort stop that gives a clear view of the fort wall, river mouth and sea together.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Walk to the western side of the fort and look for the two towers. The older one, built by the Portuguese, is only about a storey tall and has a winding spiral stair to the top for sea views, as described by Incredible India. The newer lighthouse, built by the government, has a revolving lantern and is generally viewed from outside.

Late afternoon is the best time because the light is softer and the walk back is cooler, but check how long you can stay since the fort is also a government area. The Daman Ganga estuary and the sea stretch out from here, and the fort wall and river mouth make good photographs.

The lighthouses sit close to the Lighthouse Beach road, so an easy plan is to finish at the old lighthouse and then walk or drive to the beach promenade for sunset.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check whether the old tower is open before you climb
  • Keep a hand on the rail on the spiral stair
  • Avoid the midday sun on open ground
  • Pair with the Lighthouse Beach promenade
