Daman travel guide

Two small forts on either side of a river mouth, Portuguese churches, a long shoreline and an easy drive from Vapi: a compact coastal break that suits slow days.

Daman sits at the mouth of the Daman Ganga river on the Arabian Sea, about 12 km from Vapi railway station, and is the administrative capital of the union territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. The river splits the town in two: Nani Daman on the north bank is the working town, with markets and a Jain temple; Moti Daman on the south bank is the walled Portuguese quarter. The Portuguese took the port in 1559, held it for more than 400 years, and Daman joined India in December 1961.

The town is small enough that a long weekend covers it. Moti Daman Fort and its churches deserve a morning of their own, Nani Daman Fort and the Church of Our Lady of the Sea another half day, and the rest of the time goes to the beaches. Keep expectations right: the shore is dark sand and big tides, not Goa's postcard coves, and swimming at Devka is not advised because of rocks under the water. Sunset walks suit it far better.

It is an easy place for parents and older relatives. Distances are short, the ground is mostly level, and a car or auto can reach nearly every sight. The main limits are heat, humidity and, from June to September, very heavy rain. Plan around mornings and evenings, book a hotel with a lift and easy car access, and treat the weekend crowds on Devka seafront as the thing to avoid.

What and where to eat in Daman.

Food to try in Daman

Food and restaurants

Daman's food is a mix of Gujarati vegetarian cooking, coastal seafood and a few dishes that show its Portuguese past. Fish and prawn curries are the local specialities, and Nani Daman's market area has sweet shops and chaat stalls for easy snacking. The jetty and the beaches have snack shacks and small restaurants, and Jampore in particular has simple seafood stalls.

I could not verify current trading for named restaurants, so ask your hotel for a recent recommendation and check opening hours and recent reviews before you go. Most hotels have their own restaurants, vegetarian options are widely available, and bottled or filtered water is the safe choice. Alcohol is sold in Daman at lower prices than in neighbouring Gujarat, but follow local rules and never drive after drinking.

Markets, makers and what to take home.

Shopping in Daman

Shopping

Shopping is small-scale and practical rather than a reason to visit. Nani Daman has a large market, sweet shops and chaat stalls, and the beach areas sell shells, simple souvenirs and snacks. Prices at small stalls are usually negotiable, but fixed-price shops are better for packaged food and drinks. Alcohol shops are a draw for some visitors; check bottle labels, keep receipts and be aware of the rules on carrying bottles across the border into Gujarat.

Choose without overthinking

Which Daman experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Moti Daman Fort or Nani Daman Fort, if you have time for one?

Pick Moti Daman for the bigger, calmer walled quarter with its churches and lighthouses. Pick Nani Daman if you want a shorter visit with the church, a Jain temple and the working riverside close together.

Devka Beach or Jampore Beach?

Devka is the busy hotel strip, good for sunset and easy access but not for swimming. Jampore is quieter, with casuarina shade and a wide low-tide sand strip, but it is further from most hotels.

Should I stay at Devka or near Moti Daman?

Devka has more hotels, restaurants and noise. Staying near Moti Daman and the Lighthouse Beach road is quieter and closer to the fort, but eating choices are thinner.

Is Mirasol Lake Garden worth the time?

Only as a gentle family break of about an hour. If you are short of time, a sunset at the jetty or Jampore gives more of Daman.

Know before you go

Daman travel tips

  1. 01

    Heat and humidity

Daman is warm all year, with mean daily maxima around 29 to 35 degrees C in the dry months. Visit the forts early and plan rest through the afternoon, especially from March to May.

  2. 02

    Monsoon

June to September brings over 1,800 mm of rain in a typical year on the Wikipedia climate table, with July the wettest. Expect rough seas, flooded roads and closed water sports; it is not a beach season.

  3. 03

    Getting around

Taxis and autos work for short trips, and a hired car is easiest for the beaches and Dabhel. A road bridge joins Nani and Moti Daman. Agree fares in advance or use a cab app if available.

  4. 04

    Reaching Daman

Most visitors arrive by train at Vapi and take a cab for the last 12 km, or drive from Surat or Mumbai. Check whether the small Daman airfield has scheduled flights before relying on it.

  5. 05

    Swimming

Devka's underwater rocks make swimming inadvisable. Check with locals about tides and currents before entering the sea anywhere along this coast.

  6. 06

    Dress and etiquette

Cover shoulders and knees for churches and temples, remove shoes at Jain and Hindu temples and leave leather outside the Jain temple. Ask before photographing people or services.

  7. 07

    Money

Carry some cash for small shops, snack shacks and ride operators, and agree prices for rides and water sports before you start.

  8. 08

    Alcohol and driving

Alcohol is sold more cheaply than in neighbouring Gujarat, but do not drive after drinking, and check the rules on carrying bottles back across the border.

Daman with elderly parents: what to know

  • Do the forts in the first two or three hours after opening; shade is scarce and humidity makes midday walking tiring.
  • Keep one main outing a day, then rest. The distances are short but the heat builds quickly, especially from March to May.
