The short answer
Dampa Tiger Reserve: what visitors should know first
Go only if you are a fit, patient naturalist. Arrange forest permission in Aizawl first, plan to overnight at Teirei, travel from November to March and expect basic facilities and rough ground. Tigers are not a realistic goal.
History and context
The story behind Dampa Tiger Reserve
The area was declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1985 and became a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 1994. It was notified under the Wild Life (Protection) Act on 16 March 2011, and in 2018 its core area was enlarged by about 45 square kilometres when Serhmun village was shifted from the buffer.
The Wildlife Institute of India profile gives a total area of 988 square kilometres, with a core of 545 and a buffer of 488, though other sources quote smaller figures such as 500 square kilometres.

Why it matters
Why Dampa Tiger Reserve is worth your time
Dampa is Mizoram's largest protected area and one of the state's few large blocks of continuous forest. It is a tiger reserve in name; the forest department's profile records only a single, probably isolated tiger in its latest camera-trap survey and a 2018 to 2019 survey found none. Its real importance lies in other species, including hoolock gibbons, Phayre's leaf monkey, Bengal slow loris, clouded leopard and elephant, with eight of India's fifteen primate species recorded.
For travellers it is a chance to see how remote and rugged north-east India's forests remain, and how fragile they are. The forest department itself notes high poaching pressure, vacant posts and little eco-tourism, so visiting responsibly matters more than ticking a species.

Plan your visit
How to experience it
Treat Dampa as an expedition. Begin in Aizawl with the forest department, which handles permission, and ask who will guide you. Visits are on foot with a forest guard; vehicle drives and formal safaris are not confirmed. Reach the Teirei camp by a full day's drive, and arrive before dark.
Once there, walk at first light. The forest is dense bamboo and tall trees on steep slopes, with stream crossings and little trail, so wear long sleeves, boots and neutral colours and let the guard lead. The reserve is recorded as holding hoolock gibbons, Phayre's leaf monkeys, hornbills and a large bird list, and visitor accounts report that primates and birds are the likelier encounters. Gibbon calls carry across the valleys in the morning.
Carry water, food, a torch, a first-aid kit and a power bank. Return to the rest house for the afternoon, and plan the drive back in daylight.
