Dampa is the name of a forest rather than a town. The Dampa Tiger Reserve lies in Mamit district in western Mizoram, in the Lushai Hills along the border with Bangladesh, and covers close to a thousand square kilometres including its buffer. It rises from lowland forest to ridges of around 1,000 m, a landscape of steep hills, deep valleys, bamboo thickets, streams and natural salt licks.
This is not an easy safari destination. There are no jeep circuits or ticket counters. Visitors need written permission from the forest department, usually go on foot with a forest guard, and base themselves at a basic forest rest house at Teirei. The reward is rare habitat: the reserve is recorded as home to hoolock gibbons, Phayre's leaf monkeys, clouded leopards, gaur, elephants and more than 240 bird species. Tigers were last recorded here years ago, and a recent survey found none, so go for the forest and the primates, not for a tiger.
Getting here takes a full day from Aizawl, much of it on narrow and sometimes badly broken road. The nearest towns are small, fuel stops are few and mobile coverage can be patchy. That makes Dampa a trip for keen naturalists and patient travellers who are comfortable with simple food, simple beds and some rough walking. It is not recommended for travellers with limited mobility or medical needs.

Make the full-day drive to Teirei, buy food on the way, and settle at the rest house.
