Key hubs

Dampa airport and railway station

Airport
Lengpui Airport, Aizawl (AJL); the forest department puts the reserve about 60 km away in a straight line, but the road journey is much longer
Railway station
Bairabi is the nearest railhead per the forest department (about 80 km); Silchar (SCL) in Assam is a larger alternative
Getting around
Hire a sturdy car with driver from Aizawl; inside the reserve you walk with a forest guard. No fuel was reported on the last stretch, so fill up first.

How to reach Dampa by air

The nearest airport is Lengpui (AJL) at Aizawl. The forest department lists it about 60 km from the reserve, but the road journey from Aizawl is much longer; allow most of a day to reach the Teirei camp.

How to reach Dampa by train

The forest department lists Bairabi as the nearest railhead, about 80 km away. Silchar (SCL) in Assam is another option for longer-distance trains, followed by a long road journey into Mizoram.

How to reach Dampa by road

From Aizawl the route runs past Rawpuichhip and Dapchhuah to a fork where the straight road leads on to Mamit; the road to West Phaileng and Teirei is narrow and poor in places. Official pages put the reserve about 116 to 127 km from Aizawl.

Getting around Dampa

There is no public transport in the reserve. Hire a sturdy car with driver from Aizawl and arrange a forest guard for walks. Fill the tank before the last stretch, as no fuel pump was reported.

For parents and senior travellers

Easy transfers to and in Dampa

  • Dampa is demanding. Consider whether the long, rough drive and unmarked forest walks suit parents; the permit is for fit adults.
  • Carry all medicines, a first-aid kit and a printed list of contacts, because medical help is far away and mobile signal may drop.
  • Break the journey and arrive at Teirei before dark; the last section of road is poor and slow.
  • Hire an experienced driver and a high-clearance vehicle. Do not self-drive unless you know hill roads.
  • Ask the airline or railway for wheelchair or porter assistance when you book, not on the day.
  • Pre-book the pickup from the airport or station, so nobody has to negotiate with drivers after a long journey.
  • Choose arrivals in daylight where you can, and keep the first afternoon free to rest.
