Plan 01
1 day in Dampa
- 01
Day 1: A long drive and a short walk
A day trip from Aizawl is not realistic if you want time in the forest, because the road to Teirei takes most of a day. If you must do it, start before dawn, reach Teirei by late morning with permission already arranged, walk a short trail with a forest guard, and expect to return to Aizawl after dark.
Plan 02
2 days in Dampa
- 01
Day 1: Aizawl to Teirei
Leave Aizawl early with fuel and food. Stop at the villages on the way for vegetables and snacks, check in at the Teirei rest house, and take a gentle evening walk near the camp with a guide.
- 02
Day 2: Forest walk and return
Walk with a forest guard at first light, when birds and primates are most active, then return to Aizawl in the afternoon, leaving enough daylight for the poorest sections of road.
Plan 03
3 days in Dampa
- 01
Day 1: Aizawl to Teirei
Make the full-day drive to Teirei, buy food on the way, and settle at the rest house.
- 02
Day 2: A full day in the forest
Spend the day on a guided walk, looking for hoolock gibbons, langurs and hornbills. If fit, ask the guide about the hill viewpoint near the camp. Rest in the afternoon and listen for evening bird calls.
- 03
Day 3: Village and return
Walk through Damparengpui village in the morning, then begin the return drive to Aizawl with a stop at Mamit or Rawpuichhip for lunch.

Pacing
Pacing a Dampa trip for parents and children
- Dampa is demanding. Consider whether the long, rough drive and unmarked forest walks suit parents; the permit is for fit adults.
- Carry all medicines, a first-aid kit and a printed list of contacts, because medical help is far away and mobile signal may drop.
- Travel between November and March. The wet months bring landslides and leeches that make the trip risky.
- Break the journey and arrive at Teirei before dark; the last section of road is poor and slow.
- Hire an experienced driver and a high-clearance vehicle. Do not self-drive unless you know hill roads.
- If the walking is too much, stay at the rest house and watch birds from the compound with a forest guard's advice.
