Why it matters
Why Keshavraj Temple, Asud is worth your time
Keshavraj is unusual for a Vishnu temple in being set apart from settlements, in woodland. Sources describe the stone structure as at least a thousand years old, though local lore credits the Pandavas with building it in one night. Treat the legend as story and the age as approximate.
The walk is part of the point. It gives the temple a sense of arrival that roadside shrines lack, and links it to a Marathi literary landscape through Pendse's novel. For visitors tired of beaches, it offers shade and stillness without a long drive.

How to experience it
From Dapoli, take the Harnai road and after about 6 km you reach Asud Baug. Turn right and leave the car for a 15 to 20 minute walk. The path is narrow and climbs gently through coconut, betel nut, mango and cashew trees, then crosses a small bridge that appears in S. N. Pendse's novel Garambicha Baapu, a well-known Marathi story.
The temple is dedicated to Vishnu, shown as a four-armed figure holding a conch, wheel, mace and lotus, with Ganesha at the entrance, Hanuman to one side and Garuda to the other. In the yard, a small pool is fed by a stone cow-head spout carrying water from a mountain stream, flowing through the year.
Go on a weekday morning for the quiet, and wear shoes with grip. The monsoon is described as especially green, though paths are wetter and slippery then.
