Dapoli is a small town and taluka in Ratnagiri district, on the southern Konkan coast, about 215 km south of Mumbai. It is set a little inland and above the sea, with some 50 km of coastline stretching from the Kelshi area in the north to Dabhol in the south, much of it covered in coconut groves. The town itself is a regional centre for the agricultural university, with little to see; the interest is in the villages and beaches around it.

Most visitors come for a mix of beach, temple and fort. Murud, Karde and Ladghar are the best-known beaches, with Anjarle and Kelshi offering quieter alternatives. Inland and near the coast are the Kadyavarcha Ganpati temple at Anjarle, the wooden-pillared Durga Devi temple at Murud, the woodland Keshavraj temple at Asud and the Panhalekaji rock-cut caves. At Harnai, a working fishing port sits beneath the ruined sea forts of Suvarnadurg and Kanakdurga.

The area suits a slow, two-to-three-day trip centred on one or two bases. Distances look short on the map but village roads are narrow, so a car and driver saves time and effort. Choose the cooler months, from November to February, when it is dry and comfortable. The monsoon from June to September brings very heavy rain and rough seas, which is beautiful but makes travel, beaches and boat trips unreliable.

For older travellers, the good news is that beaches and resorts are easy and level. The cautions are steps at Anjarle's temple, a woodland walk at Asud, rough roads to Karde and Panhalekaji, and a limited supply of hospitals and lifts compared with big cities. Plan sensibly, keep activities to one or two a day, and carry any regular medicines.

Dapoli itinerary

One good day

1 day in Dapoli

Start at Harnai port in the late morning to see the fishing boats and the view of Suvarnadurg and Kanakdurga, then drive to Murud for lunch and a rest. In the afternoon, visit the Durga Devi temple in Murud village, then spend the late afternoon on the beach or move to Ladghar to watch the sunset. Keep the day to these stops, because village roads are slower than distances suggest.

Two days

2 days in Dapoli

Begin at Anjarle for the Kadyavarcha Ganpati temple while the morning is cool, taking the steps slowly. Continue to Harnai port in the afternoon, then settle at Murud for the beach and a quiet evening. Ask your resort to arrange an early dolphin boat for the next morning.

What and where to eat in Dapoli.

Food to try in Dapoli

Food and restaurants

Konkan food here is seafood-led, with fish thalis, prawns and crabs on most menus, alongside coconut, rice and kokum. Solkadhi, a pink drink of coconut milk and kokum, is the usual accompaniment, and ukadiche modak, kulith pithale and local vegetable curries appear at homestays. Snacks such as kanda bhaji, vada pav and misal are easy to find.

Most beach resorts serve fish and vegetarian thalis, and small local lunch homes in Dapoli town serve simple seafood meals. For fresh fish, the Harnai harbour is the source. Vegetarian travellers should say so clearly because fish is the default, and anyone with a sensitive stomach should choose busy places and bottled water.

Shopping in Dapoli

Shopping

Shopping in Dapoli is modest and edible. The area is known for mango and jackfruit products, including amba poli and phanas poli, sun-dried mango and jackfruit sheets, along with kokum syrup, jackfruit chips and kulith flour. Cashew nuts and coconut products are also sold across the Konkan.

Buy from established shops in Dapoli town or from the villages rather than the beach, and check packaging and expiry dates. Prices are generally fixed in shops, but ask first at roadside stalls. There are no major crafts or bazaars, so treat shopping as a short stop on the way back to Khed or Mumbai.

Choose without overthinking

Which Dapoli experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Murud or Karde for a beach stay?

Choose Murud if you want resorts, restaurants and activities close together and a base near Harnai and the Durga Devi temple. Choose Karde for a quieter, lightly developed beach, accepting a rough last stretch of road and basic facilities.

Kadyavarcha Ganpati at Anjarle or Keshavraj at Asud?

Anjarle is the better-known pilgrimage stop, with a cliff-top shrine and sea views, but it involves a stone staircase. Asud is a quiet woodland temple reached by a 15-20 minute walk. Pick Anjarle for views and devotion, Asud for stillness and shade.

Ladghar or Kelshi for a sunset?

Ladghar is closer to Dapoli and known for reddish sunsets, though the main stretch can be busy. Kelshi is quieter with a long 3 km beach and a village temple, but it is a longer drive. Choose Ladghar for convenience, Kelshi for calm.

Panhalekaji caves or Unhavare hot springs on a short trip?

Panhalekaji suits history lovers and rewards a guided visit, but it involves uneven rock and a rough road. Unhavare suits a warm soak and a rainy-day outing, but it is a longer drive and has basic facilities. If time is short, choose one, not both.

Dapoli travel tips

  1. 01

    Heat and humidity

Coastal Dapoli stays warm all year, with highs around 32 to 34 C in the dry months, and humidity is higher from April to June. Do sightseeing early or late and rest at midday.

  2. 02

    Monsoon

From June to September, rainfall is extremely heavy and the sea is rough. Beaches, boat trips and the Suvarnadurg crossing are unreliable, and paths such as Asud's are slippery. Plan a visit for November to February instead.

  3. 03

    Getting around

A hired car and driver is the practical choice. ST buses reach Karde and other villages but may not suit your timing. Village roads are narrow, so allow extra time.

  4. 04

Roads to Karde and the caves

The last couple of kilometres to Karde and the road to Panhalekaji are described as rough. Travel in daylight and use the main Dapoli routes, not remote shortcuts.

  5. 05

    Sea safety

Waves can be strong, and swimming should stay within the area where locals bathe. Keep children and older relatives out of rough water and confirm life jackets on dolphin boats.

  6. 06

    Dress and temples

Dress modestly at temples, with shoulders and knees covered, and carry footwear that is easy to remove. Check local advice on photography inside shrines.

  7. 07

    Money and facilities

Carry cash, as small shops, auctions and village stalls rarely take cards and ATMs are mainly in Dapoli town. Stock up on water, snacks and medicines before heading to Karde, Kelshi or Anjarle.

  8. 08

    Weekends

Beach resorts at Murud, Karde and Ladghar fill with Mumbai and Pune visitors at weekends and holidays. Book ahead and visit weekdays for quieter beaches.

Dapoli with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan one main outing a day and rest at midday; humidity makes afternoons tiring even in winter.
  • Hire a car and driver rather than relying on ST buses. Village roads are narrow and distances take longer than they look.
