Daringbadi is a small hill town in Odisha's Kandhamal district, at roughly 915 metres above sea level. It is often called the Kashmir of Odisha, a nickname that says more about how rare cool, pine-covered hills are in the state than about any resemblance to the north. The name is said to come from a British-era officer, Daring Saheb, with badi meaning village.
The town is more about landscape than monuments. A hilltop park with a watchtower gives the overview; coffee and black pepper grow on the surrounding slopes; waterfalls and forest streams lie a short drive away; and a Sunday market brings in village produce, including the district's turmeric. More than half of residents belong to Scheduled Tribes, and the wider district is home to the Kondh community.
Set expectations honestly. Facilities are modest, distances from the coast are long, and roads are winding. The district tourism page claims Daringbadi is the only place in Odisha that sees snowfall in winter, but readers should treat that as a local claim and expect cold mornings rather than snow. Come in the cooler months, keep days short, and plan this as a quiet two-day stop, not a big itinerary.
For older travellers, the appeal is cool air, gentle viewpoints and little walking. The main caution is travel time: the road from Berhampur or Bhubaneswar takes hours, so book accommodation in advance and confirm facilities such as heating and food.
