Plan 01

1 day in Darjeeling

  1. 01

Day 1: Tiger Hill sunrise and the old town

Wake before dawn and take a jeep to Tiger Hill (a roughly 15-minute drive) to watch the sun rise over Kanchenjunga and the tea gardens below—the light on the distant peak is extraordinary on clear mornings. Return to town for a breakfast of momos and tea. Spend the late morning strolling the Chowrasta (the main mall or square), browsing the small bazaar shops for local textiles, handicrafts and tea. Have lunch at a small restaurant near the Chowrasta. In the afternoon, visit Lloyd's Botanical Garden if you prefer a gentle walk, or stay near the Chowrasta and rest at a café. As evening approaches, walk through Lebong Bazaar or the Aloobari area to see the town's quieter neighbourhoods, then find a vantage point for a sunset view over the valleys.

Plan 02

2 days in Darjeeling

  1. 01

Day 1: Tiger Hill and Chowrasta

Begin before dawn at Tiger Hill for the Kanchenjunga sunrise, then return to town for momos and tea. Spend the morning strolling the Chowrasta, browsing the bazaar and visiting any small shops that interest you. Have lunch and rest in the early afternoon. In the late afternoon, take the Darjeeling Ropeway (chairlift) down towards the Old Town area for a short ride with views, then explore the lanes around the ropeway station or visit St. Aloysius Church if you are interested in colonial-era architecture. End the day with dinner in a small restaurant near your hotel, trying local Tibetan or Nepali food such as thukpa or momos.

  2. 02

Day 2: Tea estate and viewpoints

In the morning, drive to Happy Valley Tea Estate (about 10–15 minutes from the town centre) and spend two to three hours walking through the gardens, watching the workers at harvest if it is the right season, and learning about tea processing. Have a simple lunch at the estate or back in town. In the afternoon, visit another viewpoint such as Jalapahar or a quieter spot on the ridge roads for the view over the valleys and tea gardens. If you prefer a more immersive experience, instead of a second viewpoint, spend a longer afternoon at a different tea estate such as Gopaldhara or Castleton. End the evening at Lloyd's Botanical Garden or a calm café overlooking the town.

Plan 03

3 days in Darjeeling

  1. 01

Day 1: Tiger Hill sunrise and Chowrasta

Wake before dawn for Tiger Hill and the Kanchenjunga sunrise. Return for breakfast, then spend the morning at the Chowrasta bazaar, exploring the textiles, handicrafts and local shops. Have lunch and rest. In the afternoon, ride the Darjeeling Ropeway, then walk through the old town lanes or visit St. Aloysius Church. End the day with Tibetan or Nepali dinner.

  2. 02

Day 2: Tea estates and the toy train

Spend the morning at Happy Valley Tea Estate, walking the gardens and watching the processing if possible. Return to town for lunch. In the early afternoon, book a ride on the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway—ideally the scenic section towards Ghum or on the joy ride circuit—to experience the historic narrow-gauge train as it switchbacks through the tea gardens. If you prefer not to take the full train ride, visit Batasia Loop, which is where the train makes a tight spiral. Spend the late afternoon resting or exploring Lebong or Aloobari Bazaar.

  3. 03

Day 3: Gardens, temples and a second tea estate

In the morning, visit Lloyd's Botanical Garden for a peaceful walk among alpine plants, or if you prefer something more active, drive to a second tea estate such as Gopaldhara or Castleton. Have lunch in town. In the afternoon, visit the Japanese Peace Pagoda (if open to visitors) or St. Paul's School area for the views and colonial architecture, or take another jeep to Jalapahar or a ridge viewpoint for sunset. Finish with a final meal in the Chowrasta area, browsing the shops one more time before departure.

Pacing

Make the plan work for everyone

  • Take the jeep to Tiger Hill rather than walking; it is a steep, breathless climb at high altitude, and the drive takes only 15–20 minutes from town.
  • Move slowly and drink plenty of water on your first day to acclimatize to the 2,045-metre altitude. Headaches and mild fatigue are common; they usually pass by the second day.
  • The Chowrasta and the town centre are very hilly with many stairs; choose a hotel in or very close to the Chowrasta if you prefer to walk to most places, or book one slightly further away and use jeeps for transport.
  • Hire a jeep and driver for a half-day to visit tea estates and viewpoints; it is much easier than walking between them, and the driver can often wait and bring you back.
  • Lloyd's Botanical Garden is a gentle afternoon walk for moderate fitness; it is flat in sections and has some benches to rest on.
  • Wear layers: mornings are cold, afternoons can warm, and evenings cool again. A good windproof jacket is essential.
