Dasada with elderly parents

What to see, where to stay and how to pace Dasada when someone in the family walks slowly, tires easily or simply prefers a calmer day.

Before you go

Dasada with elderly parents: what to know

  • Choose a resort with ground-level rooms close to the dining area and ask about transfers within the property.
  • Book a morning or late-afternoon safari rather than midday; the flats offer no shade and the glare is strong.
  • Jeep tracks are rough and dusty; carry a scarf, hat, water and any back or neck support you need.
  • There are no toilets on the flats, so plan stops before and after the drive.
  • Keep the Modhera and Patan day trip for a separate day, with a driver and a firm return time.

Easiest first

Places in Dasada sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (1)

  • Jhinjuwada Fort (Places to visit · 45–90 minutes) — Mostly level walking on town streets and gate approaches, but surfaces are uneven, there are no handrails or seating at the gates, and no toilets or shade are provided for visitors. Drive to each gate rather than walking the whole wall.

Some walking — plan a break (2)

  • Indian Wild Ass Sanctuary (Little Rann) (Places to visit · Half a day to a full day) — Little walking, but long, bumpy jeep rides on rough tracks, strong glare, dust and no shade or toilets on the flats. Choose a morning or late-afternoon drive, bring a hat and water, and expect to skip it if you have back or neck trouble.
  • Rani ki Vav, Patan (Places to visit · 1–1.5 hours on site) — Several flights of steps lead down to the well, with uneven stone and little seating. Older visitors can enjoy the upper galleries and the sculpture-lined walls from the top and the first landings without descending the full depth.

Practical tips for Dasada

  • Season. Plan for November to February. Outside the dry months the heat is severe, and the Rann floods in the monsoon.
  • Permits. Entry to the sanctuary is registered through the forest department. Confirm the process, fees and timings with the forest office or resort, and ask for a receipt.
  • Guides and jeeps. The flats need a high-clearance vehicle and a guide who knows the tracks. Arrange them the day before.
  • Sun and dust. Carry a hat, sunglasses, a scarf, sunscreen and plenty of water. The flats offer no shade.
  • Getting there. Ahmedabad is about 90 km away. Services thin out near the Rann, so fill the tank and carry some cash.
  • Facilities. There are no toilets or shops on the flats. Use the resort before leaving and carry snacks.
  • Cold mornings. Winter dawns are cold in an open jeep. Bring a layer you can remove as the day warms.
  • Wildlife etiquette. Keep your distance from the wild ass, do not chase them and never leave litter on the flats.
