Datia is a small town between Gwalior and Jhansi on the old north-south route across central India. It was founded in 1626 as a Bundela state, when Raja Bir Singh Deo of Orchha gave Datia and Baroni to his son Bhagwan Rao. Its main monument is the Bir Singh Palace, a seven-storey stone and brick building that stands on a rock at the western edge of town and was never actually lived in.
The town is also a pilgrimage stop. Shri Pitambara Peeth, a twentieth-century Shakta shrine to the goddess Baglamukhi, draws devotees from across northern India, and the Vankhandeshwar Shiva temple inside the same complex is tied by local tradition to the Mahabharata. A few kilometres out, the white temples of Sonagiri cover two hills and are among the best-known Digambar Jain sites in the region.
Datia suits travellers who like quiet places and are comfortable with simple facilities. There are no big resorts and no crowds; what you get is time to look properly at a palace, a temple or an inscription. The trade-off is that tourist services are thin, so a car and driver, or a base in nearby Jhansi or Gwalior, makes the day easier.
Most visitors treat Datia as a day from Jhansi, Orchha or Gwalior. It also works as a half-day stop on a train or road journey, since the palace and the Peeth are only a couple of kilometres apart. Summers are severe, so plan for the cooler months.
