Day 1: Palace, Peeth and a short drive
Start at Bir Singh Palace in the morning, when the stone is cooler, and take a local guide for the paintings. Walk or drive about two kilometres to Pitambara Peeth for darshan and the neighbouring Vankhandeshwar Shiva temple. After lunch and a rest, drive out to Sonagiri for the village temples, or to the Gujarra edict if you prefer a shorter outing. Return to Jhansi, Gwalior or Orchha by evening.

Guides for the stops on these routes
Pacing
Pacing a Datia trip for parents and children
- Tackle Bir Singh Palace early and decide at the stairs how far to go; the lower levels are enough for many visitors.
- Pitambara Peeth is easiest on weekday mornings; Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Navratri bring long queues.
- Sonagiri's hill is a long stepped climb; stay with the village temples if you tire easily.
- Carry water, a hat and any regular medicines, as services between sights are basic.
- Hire a car and driver for the outlying sites rather than relying on shared tempos.
- Avoid April to June; the heat is severe and stone buildings hold it into the evening.
