Why it matters

Why Tapkeshwar Temple is worth your time

The temple's story links it to Drona, the teacher of the Pandavas and Kauravas in the Mahabharata, who is said to have lived in the cave. According to the tradition, his son Ashwatthama prayed to Shiva when the family could not afford milk, and milk is said to have dripped from the linga. These are legends, not recorded history, but they explain why the water dripping on the linga is central to the place.

The temple matters to Dehradun as a living, local pilgrimage site. It is a simple, natural setting rather than a grand building, and a useful contrast to the city's colonial and institutional landmarks. Visiting during the Mahashivratri fair or Shravan shows how deeply the place is woven into the region's religious calendar.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Tapkeshwar is a Shiva temple built over a natural cave, called Drona Cave, with the main shivalinga inside. Water drips from the cave ceiling onto the linga, which is the reason for the name and the centre of the devotion. You enter through a small doorway and the space inside is cramped, so expect to queue behind pilgrims on busy days.

Pilgrims traditionally bathe in the nearby sulphur-water springs before entering, and the area beside the stream and forest is a popular picnic spot. Come early on a weekday and you may have the cave almost to yourself. Mondays, the Shravan month and Mahashivratri bring large crowds, with the Mahashivratri fair running for more than a week with lights, prasad and community meals.

Bring a small bag or none at all, as you leave shoes outside and may need to carry things yourself. Combine the visit with Guru Ram Rai Darbar or the Clock Tower area in the same morning. If you have a knee problem, check the access path before committing to the cave itself.

Plan with confidence

Visit as a guest, not a spectator.

  • Go on a weekday morning to avoid queues
  • Remove shoes and dress modestly
  • Avoid Mondays, Shravan and Mahashivratri if you dislike crowds
  • Wear footwear that is easy to remove
  • Be careful on wet steps near the cave
