Deogarh with elderly parents: what to know
- Use a car from Lalitpur or Jhansi; the village has little public transport.
- Do the fort in the morning. The path from the gate is uphill, with uneven stone and little shade.
- The ghat steps are steep and slippery after rain. Older visitors can see the carvings from the top.
- Visit between November and February. April to June is very hot, and the monsoon raises the river to the steps.
- Carry water, snacks and any medicines; the nearest hospital is in Lalitpur.
- Wear shoes that are easy to remove for the Jain temples, and carry socks for hot stone.

- Archaeological Museum, Deogarh (Culture and craft · 30 to 45 minutes) — A short indoor visit, mostly level, and a good place to rest in shade between the fort and the ghats. Check seating on arrival.
- Dashavatara Temple, Deogarh (Places to visit · 45 to 60 minutes) — The site is mostly level, with steps up to the plinth on each side. Shade and seating are limited, but the visit is short.
Some walking — plan a break (3)
- Deogarh Fort (Places to visit · 2 to 3 hours) — The path from the gate is uphill on uneven stone with little shade and few places to sit. Older visitors should go early, take rests and may prefer to see the lower temples only.
- Jain Temples of Deogarh (Places of worship · 1.5 to 2 hours) — Paths between the temples are uneven and some have steps. Floors can be hot, so carry socks, and take rests in the shade where you find it.
- Mahavir Swami Wildlife Sanctuary (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — Walks are short, but tracks are uneven and shaded seating is scarce. The nearest medical help is in Lalitpur, so carry water and medicines.

- Nahar Ghat and Siddh ki Gufa (Places to visit · 1 hour) — The steps are steep and can be slippery, with no handrails in places. Older visitors can enjoy the view from above without descending.

Small decisions
Practical tips for Deogarh
- Heat. April to June is very hot, and the fort has little shade. Even in March, do the climb early and rest in the afternoon.
- Monsoon. From July to September the Betwa rises to the foot of the ghat steps, and water runs down the cliffs. The steps are dangerous; see the carvings from the top.
- Getting around. Hire a car with a driver from Lalitpur or Jhansi. The village sights are close together, but the fort is uphill.
- Dress and temples. Dress modestly and wear shoes that slip off easily. Ask at the entrance whether leather items and cameras are allowed inside the Jain temples.
- Money. Carry cash in small notes. Cards and UPI may not work in the village, and the nearest ATMs are in Lalitpur.
- Supplies. Buy water, snacks and medicines in Lalitpur before you leave. The village has only basic stalls.
- Photography. Photography rules differ between the ASI sites, the Jain temples and the museum. Ask at each entrance and respect restrictions at shrines.
- Stay and booking. Book the tourist bungalow, forest rest house or dharamshala in advance with the respective managers, as availability varies.
