Why it matters

Why Kamli Ghat to Phulad heritage train ride is worth your time

Rajasthan's old princely railways were built to link Marwar and Mewar through the Aravallis, and few of those lines survive in their original form. This stretch keeps its tunnels, viaducts and narrow ghat curves and shows how the hills were crossed in the early 20th century.

For travellers it is also one of the easiest rural experiences around Deogarh: no walking, no tickets to monuments, just a slow rail ride. The monsoon-green slopes and occasional monkeys at stations make it attractive for families and older travellers who prefer sitting to climbing.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

The line crosses the Aravallis through a series of ghats, with stone viaducts and tunnels built before Independence. The Marwar Junction side was built by the Marwar rulers and the Mavli side by Mewar, and the section around Kamli Ghat, Goram Ghat and Phulad is where the scenery concentrates.

When the Valley Queen heritage train was introduced in October 2023, it was reported to run from Marwar Junction to Kamli Ghat, stopping at Phulad and Goram Ghat, with a diesel engine styled to look like a steam locomotive. Reports describe around two tunnels and 172 bridges on the route. A long halt at Kamli Ghat gives time to look around before the return.

Because timetables change, ask Deogarh Mahal to confirm what is running, and consider driving to Kamli Ghat or Phulad so you do a single leg rather than the whole day. Take a window seat, water and a hat.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Check the current heritage and passenger timetables with NWR or IRCTC
  • Ask Deogarh Mahal about road transfers to Kamli Ghat or Phulad
  • Carry water and snacks; stations are small
  • Reserve in advance for the heritage service
