Why it matters

Why Kumbhalgarh Fort is worth your time

Kumbhalgarh was built by Rana Kumbha of Mewar, with Mandan named as chief architect, in 1448. It was inscribed with other Rajasthan hill forts on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2013, and its wall, about 36 km long, is described as one of the longest continuous walls in the world.

It matters here because it shows what the Mewar rulers built when they needed a refuge in the hills. Seen alongside the smaller, more domestic Deogarh Mahal, it gives you a sense of the scale difference between a great fort and a thikana's residence.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Kumbhalgarh is a fort to walk, not just to photograph. The entry gate leads up a spiralling approach through several gates to palaces, temples and terraces on the ridge, with the long curtain wall visible along the hills. Allow a slow morning for the climb.

Start early to avoid heat and coach groups. Use the lower enclosures for short stops, rest on the terraces, and decide how high to go once you see the stairs. The palace summit gives the best view of the wall running across the hills.

Because this is a long day from Deogarh, treat it as a driving day: leave early, visit the fort in the morning, lunch at a simple place nearby, and add Ranakpur on the way back if the family is still fresh. Ask your hotel to confirm the best route and timing.

Plan with confidence

Small decisions that make the visit easier.

  • Start before 9 am to beat heat and crowds
  • Wear grippy shoes; the stairs are uneven
  • Carry water and a hat
  • Check ticket rates and hours on official sites
