Before you go

Devgad with elderly parents: what to know

  • Visit forts early in the morning; there is little shade and some steps.
  • Hire a car and driver for the scattered sights; local transport is infrequent.
  • Carry water, a hat and sun protection; facilities at sights are minimal.
  • Avoid Mahashivratri at Kunkeshwar unless you want large crowds and book early if you go.
  • Choose winter months; the monsoon makes forts slippery and the sea rough.
  • Confirm ground-floor or lift access when booking homestays.

Easiest first

Places in Devgad sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (6)

  • Devgad Beach (Places to visit · 1 hour) — Mostly level with a short stairway to the cliff-top park. Little shade; carry water and sun protection.
  • Devgad Fort (Places to visit · 1-2 hours) — The fort is small and mostly level, with a short approach and a few steps to the ramparts. Shade and seating are limited, so go in the morning and bring water.
  • Kunkeshwar Beach (Places to visit · 1-2 hours) — The sand is flat and firm near the water, making short walks easy. Shade is limited and the sun is strong; step down to the beach carefully if the path is wet.
  • Kunkeshwar Temple (Places of worship · 1-2 hours) — The temple area is mostly level with a short walk from parking and a few steps. The sea breeze helps, but shade and seating are limited; Mahashivratri brings dense crowds.
  • Rameshwar Dockyard and Waghotan Creek (Places to visit · 30-45 minutes) — Level ground near the creek, but the surface can be muddy; there is no seating or shade. It suits most visitors for a short stop.
  • Shri Dev Rameshwar Temple, Girye (Places of worship · 45-60 minutes) — The path down is long and slightly sloped, cut through rock, with some steps; it is manageable but there is little seating.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Vijaydurg Fort (Places to visit · 2-3 hours) — Paths inside are mostly level but uneven laterite, with stretches of steps and ramps up to the bastions. There is little shade or seating, so older visitors should carry water and take frequent breaks; the lower walls and gateway can be enjoyed without climbing.
