How to experience it
Kanker lies about 60 km south of Dhamtari on the main road towards Bastar. Gadiya Mountain rises above the town, with the Doodh river below. The path to the top is a moderately challenging climb; start early to avoid the heat.
On the summit is a tank that holds water all year, in two parts named Sonai and Rupai after the daughters of King Dharma Dev. South of the tank is Churi Pagar, a cave with a narrow entrance said to have sheltered the king during attacks. On the south-east side is Jogi cave, about 50 m long, where holy men are said to have meditated; a small pool inside spills over the rocks as a little waterfall.
The top gives a panoramic view over Kanker and its forested hills. Come down before midday, and carry water.
