Dhamtari is a working trade town about 65 km from Raipur, long known for rice milling, timber and, historically, a narrow-gauge railway that made it a collecting point for forest produce. It is not a place with a list of grand monuments. What it offers is a base on the Mahanadi, with a few well-defined outings that suit travellers who like river landscapes, temples and forest country.

The nearest of these is Gangrel Dam, officially the Pandit Ravishankar Sagar, an earth-fill dam across the Mahanadi completed in 1979. It is the longest dam in Chhattisgarh and feeds a large reservoir that also supplies water to the Bhilai Steel Plant. Closer still, in town, is the Bilai Mata temple, dedicated to the goddess Durga as Vindhyavasini.

Further out, the road runs south-east into Nagri and Sihawa, where the Mahanadi rises in the hills. At Sihawa, the Karneshwar Mahadev temple complex dates to the twelfth century and is protected by the state. Beyond it lies Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary, a large teak-and-bamboo forest in the Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve. These are day trips requiring a hired car, an early start and patience with rural roads.

Dhamtari suits those who enjoy slow, regional travel and combine it with a stay in Raipur. The best months are October to March. Summers are very hot and the monsoon is heavy, though the countryside is at its greenest then.

Food to try in Dhamtari

Food and restaurants

Chhattisgarhi food is simple and rice-based, with dishes such as chila, fara and local vegetables cooked with minimal oil. Dhamtari has over 200 rice mills, so rice is the staple. Because the town has a large Marathi community, you may also find Maharashtrian snacks.

Dhamtari has no famous restaurant row, so ask your hotel to suggest a reliable local place. Eat freshly cooked food, drink bottled water and carry snacks on forest and temple day trips, since facilities are limited.

Markets, makers and what to take home.

Shopping in Dhamtari

Shopping

Dhamtari is a trade town rather than a shopping destination. Its markets deal in everyday goods, rice and farm produce. For souvenirs, you will find more choice in Raipur, which has government emporiums for Chhattisgarh crafts. Do not expect organised tourist shops at the dam or at the Sihawa temples.

Choose without overthinking

Which Dhamtari experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Gangrel Dam or Sihawa temples for a single day?

Gangrel Dam is close and easy, a good choice if time or energy is short. Sihawa is a longer drive into the hills for twelfth-century temples near the Mahanadi's source, and suits those who want history and a full day.

Sitanadi Wildlife Sanctuary or Gangrel Dam?

Sitanadi is a long drive for forest scenery with uncertain wildlife sightings and unconfirmed visitor arrangements. Gangrel is a dependable, short outing. Choose Sitanadi only if you are a wildlife enthusiast and have called ahead.

Base yourself in Dhamtari or Raipur?

Raipur has more hotels, restaurants and transport links, and Dhamtari is only about 65 km away. Stay in Dhamtari if you plan to reach Sihawa or Sitanadi early in the morning.

Dhamtari travel tips

  1. 01

    Heat

Summer is very hot; Raipur, the nearest representative station, has May highs above 41 C. Plan outings for the morning.

  2. 02

    Monsoon

July and August bring more than 300 mm of rain each in the region. Rural roads and forest tracks can become difficult.

  3. 03

    Getting around

A car with driver is the practical option for the dam, Sihawa and Sitanadi. Autos and buses serve the town only.

  4. 04

    Cash

Carry cash for small shops, temple offerings and tolls, as card acceptance is patchy outside Raipur.

  5. 05

    Temple etiquette

Dress modestly and remove footwear before entering temples. Ask before photographing inside.

  6. 06

    Forest areas

Check access, security and any permit needs for Sitanadi with the reserve office. Do not enter the forest on foot without staff.

  7. 07

    Facilities

Toilets, food and medical help are limited on rural routes, so carry water, snacks and any regular medicines.

  8. 08

    Mahashivratri

The Sihawa temple fair draws thousands of devotees. Reach early or choose another day if you dislike crowds.

Dhamtari with elderly parents: what to know

  • Travel between October and March; summer heat is intense and the monsoon makes rural roads slippery.
  • Use a car with driver for all outings; public transport to Sihawa and Sitanadi is limited.
