Dhanaulti is a village and tehsil in Tehri Garhwal district, on the Mussoorie to Chamba road at about 2,286 metres. It is small: a short bazaar, a scatter of stays and a forest department park, set among deodar, oak and rhododendron on a ridge that looks north to the snow peaks on a clear morning. Most visitors reach it from Mussoorie, roughly an hour away by road, or drive up from Dehradun.

The pleasures are modest and genuine. The Eco Park, run by the Uttarakhand Forest Department in two sections called Amber and Dhara, gives you an hour or two under tall trees. The Surkanda Devi temple, a Shakti Peeth reached by a short climb from Kaddukhal village, adds a pilgrimage and the best view in the area. Beyond that, the draw is simply the air, the quiet and the long walks along the ridge road.

Dhanaulti suits slower trips. It has few restaurants and a limited choice of hotels, so book ahead and expect simple food. Roads are narrow and winding, and the monsoon months of July and August bring cloud, rain and landslide delays. For older travellers it works best as one or two unhurried nights, with a car and driver, a warm layer even in summer and a short list of sights rather than a long one.

One good day

1 day in Dhanaulti

Start at the Eco Park soon after it opens, when the deodar glades are quiet, and allow an hour or two for the Amber and Dhara sections. Drive on to Kaddukhal for the climb to Surkanda Devi temple, allowing a slow pace and rest stops, and eat a simple lunch at a dhaba or your hotel afterwards. If time and energy remain, stop at the Aaloo Khet viewpoint on the ridge in the late afternoon. Leave in daylight, since the mountain road back to Mussoorie or Dehradun is easier in good light.

What and where to eat in Dhanaulti.

Food to try in Dhanaulti

Food and restaurants

Eating out in Dhanaulti is limited. Most visitors eat at their hotel or resort, and at simple roadside dhabas on the Mussoorie to Chamba road serving dal, rice, rotis, parathas, tea and Maggi. The Eco Park has snack and tea vendors near the entrance. If you want a wider choice, plan a meal in Mussoorie or Chamba on the way.

Apples and other local produce, such as jams and honey, are sold on the road and at some resorts; ask about the source and check seals on honey and jams. Carry water and a few snacks on the Surkanda Devi climb, and order dinner early since many places close their kitchens early.

Shopping in Dhanaulti

Shopping

Shopping in Dhanaulti is small-scale: a short bazaar with woollens, shawls and scarves, local jams, honey and apple products, and the stalls at the Eco Park. Prices are not fixed everywhere, so ask before buying, and compare the feel of the wool before paying for anything sold as pashmina or merino. Mussoorie, about an hour away, has the larger choice.

For gifts that travel well, choose sealed jars of jam, honey or apple products from a shop with a visible label and a batch date. Fresh apples are seasonal and sold along the road in autumn.

Choose without overthinking

Which Dhanaulti experience is right for your trip?

Most plans get crowded because nobody is willing to choose. These comparisons make the trade-offs clear.

Dhanaulti or Mussoorie for a short hill trip?

Choose Dhanaulti for forest, quiet and fewer people; choose Mussoorie for restaurants, shops, hospitals and a lively evening. Many travellers stay in Mussoorie and drive up to Dhanaulti for the day, though one night in Dhanaulti is calmer.

Surkanda Devi climb or just the Eco Park?

The Eco Park is easy, shaded and suits any age. Surkanda Devi is a steep climb of about 2 km from Kaddukhal for the temple and the best view in the area. Go for the temple if you are walking comfortably and want a pilgrimage; otherwise skip it and enjoy the park.

Dhanaulti in summer or in winter?

Summer (March to June) is easier for walking and driving, and the views are clear in the mornings. Winter is cold, quiet and sometimes snowy, which many people love, but roads are slower and heating matters. Both avoid the July and August monsoon.

Adventure park or a quiet forest day?

The adventure park suits children and active groups, with zip lines and rope courses. A forest walk and viewpoint day suits older travellers and those who want a slow pace; combine both if the group is mixed.

Know before you go

Dhanaulti travel tips

  1. 01

    Altitude and cold

At about 2,300 metres the nights are cold in every season. Carry a warm jacket, a cap and layers, and expect heavy cold in December to February.

  2. 02

    Getting around

Taxis and your own car are the practical options. Local buses on the Mussoorie to Chamba road are infrequent, and the sights are scattered along winding roads.

  3. 03

    Walking

The Eco Park is a gentle walk, but the Surkanda Devi route from Kaddukhal is steep and about 2 km. Start early, wear sturdy shoes and carry water.

  4. 04

    Money

Carry some cash for entry fees, tea stalls and small shops, as card acceptance and mobile signal can be patchy. The nearest bank branches and ATMs may be in Mussoorie or along the road.

  5. 05

    Closures

Opening hours and fees at the Eco Park and adventure park are given differently by different sources, so confirm locally. Some small shops and camps close in the monsoon and the deep winter.

  6. 06

    Road safety

Monsoon rain brings landslides and slippery roads from July to September. Drive in daylight, avoid long drives after heavy rain, and check road status before you leave.

  7. 07

    Photography

Early mornings give the clearest Himalayan views from ridge viewpoints. Be respectful at temples, ask before photographing people and follow signs inside the Eco Park.

  8. 08

    Book ahead

Accommodation is limited. Book early for weekends, summer holidays and winter snowfall periods, and confirm heating, hot water and parking.

Dhanaulti with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan for altitude and cold: at about 2,300 metres evenings are chilly even in summer, so pack a jacket, cap and warm socks.
  • Surkanda Devi is the one demanding sight. Go early, walk slowly, rest on the way and drop it from the plan if breathlessness or knee trouble is a concern.
