Before you go

Dhanaulti with elderly parents: what to know

  • Plan for altitude and cold: at about 2,300 metres evenings are chilly even in summer, so pack a jacket, cap and warm socks.
  • Surkanda Devi is the one demanding sight. Go early, walk slowly, rest on the way and drop it from the plan if breathlessness or knee trouble is a concern.
  • Hire a car and driver for the whole trip rather than relying on shared vehicles; hairpin roads are slower than the distance suggests.
  • Book a stay with heating, hot water and parking close to the entrance, as options are limited and fill up on weekends and in school holidays.
  • Avoid July and August: rain, cloud and landslides make the drives tiring and the views poor.
  • Carry prescribed medicines, water and a few snacks; shops and pharmacies are few and distant from the sights.

Easiest first

Places in Dhanaulti sorted by walking effort

Easy on the legs (3)

  • Aaloo Khet (Potato Farm) Viewpoint (Places to visit · 30 to 60 minutes) — The ground is open and sloping, with no seating or shelter. It can be cold and windy in the early morning. Older visitors should go by car as close as possible and wear warm layers.
  • Chamba (Tehri Garhwal) (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — The town is on a main road with level stretches, shops and tea stalls. Views can be enjoyed from the car or short walks. Keep a warm layer and avoid evenings in winter when it gets cold.
  • Dhanaulti Eco Park (Places to visit · 1 to 2 hours) — Mostly gentle paths under trees, with benches and snack stalls near the entrance. Some sections are uneven or slope, and it is cold in shade; carry a jacket and take it slowly.

Some walking — plan a break (1)

  • Chandrabadani Devi Temple (Places of worship · Half to full day including the drive) — After the road ends at Jamnikhal, there is a short uphill walk reported at about 1 km. It is steep in places and cold at altitude. Older visitors should go slowly and may prefer to skip it if breathless.

Lots of walking or steps — choose carefully (1)

  • Surkanda Devi Temple (Places of worship · 2 to 3 hours including the climb and the drive) — The route is steep, uneven in places and cold in wind. There is little seating on the way. Older visitors should go slowly, rest often and take a walking stick; consider skipping if heart or knee conditions apply. Check locally whether a ropeway at the base is running.

Small decisions

Practical tips for Dhanaulti

  • Altitude and cold. At about 2,300 metres the nights are cold in every season. Carry a warm jacket, a cap and layers, and expect heavy cold in December to February.
  • Getting around. Taxis and your own car are the practical options. Local buses on the Mussoorie to Chamba road are infrequent, and the sights are scattered along winding roads.
  • Walking. The Eco Park is a gentle walk, but the Surkanda Devi route from Kaddukhal is steep and about 2 km. Start early, wear sturdy shoes and carry water.
  • Money. Carry some cash for entry fees, tea stalls and small shops, as card acceptance and mobile signal can be patchy. The nearest bank branches and ATMs may be in Mussoorie or along the road.
  • Closures. Opening hours and fees at the Eco Park and adventure park are given differently by different sources, so confirm locally. Some small shops and camps close in the monsoon and the deep winter.
  • Road safety. Monsoon rain brings landslides and slippery roads from July to September. Drive in daylight, avoid long drives after heavy rain, and check road status before you leave.
  • Photography. Early mornings give the clearest Himalayan views from ridge viewpoints. Be respectful at temples, ask before photographing people and follow signs inside the Eco Park.
  • Book ahead. Accommodation is limited. Book early for weekends, summer holidays and winter snowfall periods, and confirm heating, hot water and parking.
