The short answer

Bagh Caves: what visitors should know first

Worth it for history and art lovers, but plan a full day. The caves are about 97 km from Dhar, the murals have faded, and the best paintings were removed to a museum in Gwalior. Go for the setting and the architecture, check opening hours locally, and set off early.

History and context

The story behind Bagh Caves

The caves were probably excavated in the 5th to 7th centuries. A copperplate inscription of Maharaja Subandhu, dated Gupta era 167 (487), places a repair of Cave 2 in the late 5th century.

The ASI restored the caves over about 17 years, and most of the surviving paintings were removed in 1982 to protect them.

Why it matters

Why Bagh Caves is worth your time

Bagh is one of central India's lesser-known Buddhist sites, but it holds work of real significance. The caves were probably excavated between the 5th and 7th centuries. The paintings that survive in fragments are a link in the story of Buddhist art in India.

Most of the removed murals are now held at the Gujari Mahal Archaeological Museum in Gwalior, which means what remains in situ is faint. The place rewards patience: the sheer carved rock, the quiet and the river valley setting are part of the pleasure. It makes a good contrast to Dhar's medieval Islamic and Hindu heritage.

Highlights

What not to miss

  1. 01

    Rang Mahal (Cave 4)

The most significant cave, once with fine mural paintings on its portico.

  2. 02

    Pandava Cave (Cave 2)

    The best-preserved of the group.

  3. 03

    Painted fragments

Traces of tempera plaster can still be seen in several caves.

Plan your visit

How to experience it

Make an early start and treat Bagh as a full-day excursion from Dhar. The caves lie on the southern slopes of the Vindhya Range, about 97 kilometres away by road, and the journey takes a good part of the morning. Carry water and a snack, since facilities near the site are limited.

On arrival, look at the cave plan before climbing. Of nine rock-cut monuments, five survive, all of them viharas, or monk residences. Cave 4, called Rang Mahal, is the most important; Cave 2, known as the Pandava Cave, is the best preserved. Fragments of painted plaster are visible in several of the caves, so bring a torch if you want to see them.

Finish by visiting the village of Bagh, famous for its hand-block printed textiles, if time allows. Return to Dhar by late afternoon to avoid driving after dark.

Plan with confidence
